sky+ ?

Featured Replies

I've been looking at getting sky+ as work have a half price skyworld offer for 12 months.

Are the boxes all sky+ 160 now? The sky website doesn't really give much details about the hardware....

You will find that they are the smaller HDD, the 160 aer more expensive.

nothing on the website about it, and when I spoke to sky they didn't have a clue what sky+ 160 is!

But it easy to upgrade the hard drive yourself, I have an original box with a 120GB Drive in that's been running for nearly 2 years now.

One thing to condsider is Sky's new HD Service starts Q1 2006.

so is this box the one that can record two channels? or is that the 160 box?

HD, hmmmm... Don't have a HD TV though.

You can record two channels on a standard + box.

Thats good then, so will you be able to convert this existing box to a HD one? Or will u need a new box?

The series link function, does that work across channels, ie. If I set it to tape eastenders but I'm recording two other things, will it tape the showing on bbc3. My tivo does this....

But at the moment if you try and change channel it crashes the recording lol

No you can only have access to two channels. You can record two and watch a previously recorded one though. No it won't be HD ready.

Series link is exactly that - it will record every program in that series, providing there is a channel/tuner not in use to do so.

ATM the sky+ 160 box is discounted, so it's the same price as the older "standard" sky+.

Got sky+160, and no crashes or glitches so far. Just lots of films recorded :)

Oh - if you don't have the movies or sports packages, you pay £10 a month for the privilege of using the sky+ functionality...

I seem to be seeing double. Back in a minute when I have cleaned my glasses. :(

That's much better, thanks, Steve. :D

One of my son's had Sky+ installed just 2 weeks ago. The bigger box wasn't an option then.

Been drinking again' date=' Denis? :)

Details on sky+ are here: http://www.sky.com/skyplus/launcher

Personally, looking forward to this launching :)

Not yet, Steve.

That link quotes Sky+ as

Ah, sorry Denis. I was only talking about the cost of the boxes standalone (as listed under equipment on this page) - once you start going for multiroom subscriptions and all that it changes the prices again...

I got the normal 40Gb version (20 hrs recording) and upgraded to 160Gb (80hrs) myself for about £55 6 months ago. Dead easy upgrade but interupt the initial format stage after reseting the Sky+ box won't be able to see the HDD so you have to remove it and put it int a PC to do a low level format.

Only issue i have is that there is a clicking noise from the new drive when playing and recording at the same time. I had hoped that running the quietdrive software would prevent this but alas no. I've got used to it though and the drive works flawlessly. Touch wood.

So do you want me to come round and help you set it up then? ? :D

High Definition Sky+ should be great if you have a HD ready LCD or Plasma TV but unfortunately I don't. TBH I i'm putting it off until I can afford HD Sky+ and it's available. It'll probably cost another £200-£300. Great eh!

If you are thinking of buying a HD TV make sure it has HDMI connections. This is fast becoming the Scart socket of the HD industry.
