Noise from clutch 2007 1.4 TDI

Featured Replies

Any help welcome,

For a while now my 1.4 TDI has made a strained honking noise (not the horn) when I lift off the clutch pedal and accelerate from a stop in first. It now does it in reverse from stop and is worse when the engine is cold. When the engine is warm it tends not to happen and if I accelerate hard and drop the clutch quick it does not happen. Is this just a quirk of the 1.4 or is it something I need to look at..........

Any ideas ??????

Possibly a dry clutch thrust bearing, our 1.4 TDI Greenline does this, and has done for a while. Don't think it is a worn clutch which would be run the rivets on the flywheel or pressure plate as there is no slippage.

I agree that it is doubtful the clutch is worn as it is an intermittent noise, I would expect a worn clutch plate to be a more regular noise, gradually getting worse and slipping.

The thrust bearing has got to be the main suspect, I assume that like all bearings when dry they work themselves toward self destruction if not dealt with?

One of mine (2007 80 bhp TDI) shrieks a bit when you let the clutch out to take the bite, once it's warmed up it seems OK.

thanks for replies!

For what it's worth; my 1.4TDI makes all sorts of weird noises from the clutch/gearbox especially when cold but everytime I have got it checked there's never been an issue. Indeed, I've done nearly 45k miles since I've owned it now and I haven't had any problems.
