strong diesel smell

Featured Replies

I have noticed lately that when idling there is a strong diesel smell from the exhaust, sometimes along with a burnt smell, and after a run when coming to a stop to unload/load luggage, no visible smoke, ether at idle or when driving.

Just wondered if this would pass its mot, and what to check

Do you have a DPF on your 1.9? Re-gen?

as far as I recall, all the MK2 Superb diesels have a DPF and the smell you describe seems to be an interrupted regen cycle.

engine BXE

Okay that's why it dosent have a dpf then :-) is the engine the orginal one ? Or has it been replaced ? Because i kind og agree with mannyo :-)

Watching this thread with interest. My PD140 (BMM) emits the same smell all the time. It has a DPF but it still smells when not on a regen.

If the boot is open, or you jump out of the car after turning it off it smells. It definitely never used to.

I left it running the other day whilst at the jet wash, nearly choked myself!

Just an update smell still there but not all the time, but it passed its emmission test during its taxi test that gave it a clean bill of health

Check under the engine sound cover for diesel leakage

Its coming out the exhaust  Peter, along with what can be discribed as a burning smell sometimes, the only thing I can think of is either 1 of the injectors is working but is not spraying as it should or an oil ring problem , but its not using oil, or oil vapour is getting burnt off from somewhere,

It's actual diesel fuel smell not fumes from burnt diesel?

Its a bit of both, but with the occasional burnt smell, similar to burning rubber
