Putting a Plate back from retention

Featured Replies

I've just put my plate back on the Superb. It was on retention.....

Didn't cost anything.... I'm not complaining but I expected it to cost !!

It did cost.... but it was included when you removed it from your previous vehicle.

I must say the new online system is MUCH better, not to mention quicker!

Drinks on you then ;)

Yeah it's £80 to put it on retention, valid for 10 years, then doesn't cost you anything further when you want to put it back onto another car.

I signed for my new car yesterday and my plate which is currently on my Superb had to come off there and then. They did the transfer online and told me that my cherished plate was already assigned to my new car. I was gobsmacked that it was so fast.

A quick update to this. My log book for the Superb came back this morning with its new (old) number on it. A two day turnaround. Very impressed.

Well this turned into a bit of a nightmare for me ....

Swapped registrations with DVLA and sorted insurance

Called in at Halfords and purchased tape

Took old plates off and carefully marked with masking tape where new plates were going to stick

Carefully stuck plates on front and back

Stood back to admire my handy work

The spacing was wrong on the plates ..... My fault for not spotting it but I was royally pi##ed off with the dealer. The one 'freebie' they threw in and they screwed it up. I mean how can whoever they have make the plates get the spacing wrong for gods sake !! ??

I was online last night ordering new plates..... £35 I shouldn't have had to spend...

So Mrs had to bring me into work today and pick me up and same tomorrow.

We are going away for the weekend but if the plates don't arrive tomorrow that will be screwed up as well...... Grrrrrrr !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The spacing in that you wanted it to say something it shouldn't and the dealer has made them correctly, as per the law?

No the plate doesn't actually say anything.... They just screwed up the spacing.... Instead of XX06 XXX it was XX0 6XXX

Ah, that's crap isn't it. Eejits.

If the dealer made the error, suggest you the £35 invoice and stick under their noses. They can't really wriggle out of it.

Well I should have spotted it really... I just stuck the plates straight under the boot floor when I picked the car up... Cant even remember looking at them. I was concentrating so hard on sticking the bloody things straight I didn't see it....  On the plus side my little 'un was please because she got them !!!

They should really be able to do this sort of thing standing on their heads

  • 4 weeks later...

Just to clarify, if I have my cherished plate on retention can I get the new car supplier to assign the plate on delivery or do it later myself?

I had my reg. on retention and it was no trouble at all for the dealer to register the car with this number as a first registration, you will need the retention certificate.

and it costs nothing, you already paid when you put it on retention.

Thanks Phil, I'm buying through NCD not through a dealer direct. I need to check if that's possible. Thanks for your reply

Im putting my plate on once the car arrives and registered to a plate... reason.. just don't want to add to any delays.

NCD tell me that the new Superb is delivered with a 16 plate, I then have to send off the V5 to Swansea. Three weeks turnaround l will get a code to swap to my cherished plate online.

You can do all of this online now once you receive the V5C in your name.

My V5 took 2 months to arrive, once you have that you can do it all online and then swap the plates immediately!

Thanks guys for the info. The V5 is not physically posted to DVLA it is all done online. Is that correct?

Correct.

2 days after I changed the plate online the new V5 turned up.
