New To DA ..Looking for some advice.

Featured Replies

So having hand polished/ waxed for years, ive decided to have a go at DA.

Ive read this http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/images/misc/dapolishing.pdf

Which is excellent.

So im hoping i can try and skip some trail and error, as im sure there are loads of you guys using a DA on Black Magic paint. Mine is a fabia vrs.

- i have 12 year old paint, with swirls / holograms/ few chips/ few scratchs/ few touch up spots ... so its hardly new paint :p

- I have some meguiars scratch x 2.0 - so tips on using this with the DA please. - should i use it or is it too harsh?

- Hows the paint as a general rule? I know all cars can vary... but on the whole is it hard / soft? does it require light/heavy cutting?

Im thinking to after my cleaning routine, clay then use scratch x, then a glaze, then wax -  or should i do a polish? i have some super resin polish. what order should this be done :p

 - Whats a good glaze? Was thinking black hole?

My budget is low, its no new car or show car, i would like good results. but its no Ferrari, so no wax made by virgins hands, using organic oils etc etc.

Right - your routine sounds fine, scratch x is a polish. Before claying though you need to look at removing fallout and tar.

Bilt Hamber Korrosol fallout remover and Obsession wax tar remover are my favourites.

Scratch x isn't hugely abrasive is from megs consumer line so it will be fine on DA.

Fabia paint is usually medium I find in regards to hardness. Are you wanting to correct or just enhance?

A filler glaze will hide swirls so might be something to consider - I use Auto Finesse Ultra Glaze.

Blackhole I find average - not the best filler either.

For a wax look to Bilt Hamber Double Speed. £15 for a big tin and will last you ages. It's got solid durability and very nice beading. Worth well over its price tag.

Another good place to look is Car Chem - solid products at good prices. Make a lot of stuff for other brands too.

Hope that helps. Any questions just fire away. Great bunch on here who are very experienced so we will make sure you have the right stuff.

Like Ben, I found Black Hole very average! I used it twice then sold my bottle.

Super Resin Polish is good on a DA! Very little abrasive qualities though. So better to go with a polish first to remove swirls and scratches, rather than filling them.

Filler Glazes are brilliant! I've used 50 Cal Cover Up before with great results, and will be using Ultra Glaze this spring on the Superb. These are best applied with a DA too, as you can get results like you have corrected the paint in half the time!

Thanks for that, very informative.

I was going to skip the iron fallout step. I thought it a bit ott, and presumed clay would do the most, and scratch x the rest. I will probably go for some Bilt Hamber Double Speed. I was going to go for Collinite No. 476S Super Double Coat Auto Wax, big tin for £19.

- I guess correct, then enhance :p

- Im thinking to have a go with the scratch x, then see how the super resin acts as a filler - and ditch the black hole.

Thanks for that, not sure what 50cal is :p

Currently pre DA, i have been using snow foam, then meguiars gold shampoo, then every 4 months super resin polish followed by autoglyms extra gloss sealant. Then same wash routine every two weeks, using a wax detail spray to top up/ dry.

 - whats the best method to strip it off, and start again? ive read to use washing up liquid???
