Rust treatment

Featured Replies

I've just acquired a 2010 CR140 Superb Elegance and had my local independent VAG specialist give it a "once over". A few minor defects were noted and these will generally be dealt with in the not too distant future. Also some light rust was beginning to affect the underbody areas particularly beneath the seats and the spare wheel well. I'd like to get this treated before it develops into something more serious and was wondering if any forum members could recommend a local rustproofing establishment in the Nottingham area.

Many thanks,

Dave

It's worth checking on the amount of anti-corrosion warranty that might apply here - I think all are 10+ years. We had some corrosion rectified at no cost to us on our mk1 Superb after 7 years (it was around the number plate lights).

Thanks for the advice Jonathan but I can't really describe the problem as "corrosion" - it's just slight surface rust on the underbody panels, wishbones etc. I had a similar problem on my Octavia II , particularly affecting the underside of the spare wheel well but didn't do anything about it ..... wish I had caught it earlier!  I feel that the Superb would benefit from some preventative treatment as I wish to keep the car for some years yet.

Interesting that my Mk1 Octavia didn't rust!!

Thanks again,

Dave

Update!

I've decided to try these people:-

I'll let you know how I get on - won't be until the end of March though.

I have used Waxoyl on all my cars for years. They do a compressed air applicator which is handy for the underneath and then things like the wishbones and suspension you can just paint it on to save covering the brakes in it if your not prepared to mask everything off. They used to do a 'pump it up yourself' kit that was good as well as an aerosol can. Make sure you warm it up before you attempt to spray it though.

I wouldn't worry too much about a bit of rust on suspension arms and underneath on the chassis, with all the salt on the roads in winter and our climate, a lot of cars will look scabby at that age. Thankfully, the likes of Skoda, VW etc. use decent steel so although it can look bad, it takes a while to cause any real damage, the bodywork is what you want to be keeping an eye on really. Also can depend on where the car is from, anything near the coast with the salty air can accelerate any rust.

I plan on doing my Superb when it gets a bit warmer so hopefully it will stay looking like new underneath

I used to use waxoyl - now I use Bilt Hamber. A lot less messy than waxoyl and self heals unlike waxoyl which always seems to flake off after a while.

It comes in a spray can with an injection lance too so you can I ject into box sections etc.

UB50 for underneath and UC for the engine bay, bonnet, doors etc.

I used to treat all my cars with Waxoyl when I was younger, back in the '70's and '80's, but nowadays I prefer to let someone else do it for me. I also used ACF50 on my motorbikes - fantastic stuff!

I remember spraying my old transit with old engine oil underneath using a compressor, what a mess I made , I used to park it well away from the house as it dripped oil for weeks after , must have added a few years to its life
