Gearbox broke

Had a knocking from underneath car but more of a feeling of a knock not sound which I thought might be a drive shaft/cv joint or similar however garage says box is fubar, anyway he reckons best is recon box rather than second hand but by the time I've paid for this inc clutch/flywheel and labour think its going to be about £650-£800, car only has 78k on it would have thought a box would last longer than that.

Octavia's, Golf's, Polo's, Seats, boxes have been  made of chocolate since 1996 onwards. I went through many on the polo, my mates had the same issue on their golfs. Crap rivets within the box fails and shoots through smashing your gears and punching a whole through the box.

I simply typed in Google - Gearbox Rivet, and look what comes up...
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=gearbox+revit&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=jonDVsCwMseZUePFqOAH#safe=off&q=gearbox+rivet

Not a pretty sight, but we've all suffered this, and I just hope mine which has just ticked over on 77k won't develop the same fault but I'm expecting it. If it ever does go it will go to a man in his shed who is a gearbox specialist and I'll get him to replace all the **** parts with stronger internals.

Thanks for that sounds exactly what mechanic is saying i.e. something to do with gears in diff, however dont know whether its worth fixing or trading only had car 11 months so a bit pi55ed off to be honest especially with the lowish miles

I know mate, I feel for you believe me. If you think the car is worth it and you're thinking long term then by all means get it done but if you think it's not worth it get rid and go for something else.

Should have lasted longer than that, I've not heard of common issues before on the mk1 VRS. Other manufacturers gearboxes have other weaknesses that are more well known than any on the octy.

If I was in your shoes I'd probably get it fixed - either with a recon box from a reputable supplier or have your box rebuilt.

Get them to drill rivets add arp bolts

Job done

Thanks yeah have read about these rivets disintegrating or whatever and being a common issue on VAG boxes, I love the car engine sweet as a nut, needs a front end respray due to crap in bottom of wings and stone chips but its a great size with a a good size boot and goes well enough.

I've a box going spare, £70 collected. Where abouts are you Woody77?

You might be a bit far for me mate I'm in South Shields but thanks anyway.

Anybody know anywhere in North East that they would recommend for box refurbs or what other boxes fit without any trouble?

Will this bolt kit fit? Seems a lot of money for a few bolts, whats so special about them to be costing that much?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Volkswagen-Golf-Bora-02J-Gearbox-Bolt-Kit-12-5mm-or-12-25mm-/150977606514?hash=item2326f77372:m:mcSEBLa6qL9F-qWm0P0nRlg#vi-ilComp
