Loan cars / Courtesy cars / Breakdown cover.

Featured Replies

If you purchase / choose breakdown cover included in your insurance premium, and you have courtesy car cover included, would the courtesy car be included for both accident and any breakdown callouts? (or just accident).

I have posted here (general) for a more prompt reply and wider audience. :) .

I am changing my insurance a good bit this year as doing much more mileage, so starting to protect my 13yrs 'no claims' again and getting better cover generally including options that I would not normally bother with.

Anyone had Breakdown & Courtesy car included before and had to use it? Any issues?

I know with the AA (etc) Breakdown there is a separate premium, for car hire to be included.

Cheers guys.

Can't help with your question.

I always buy separate, I have Green Flag cover, which covers me in whatever car I'm in, and have been very good on the few times I used them.

As for courtesy cars, I would imagine it is covered as "your" car, if in doubt ask the insurance company.

Most courtesy /loan cars I've seen have been young enough to be covered by maker's breakdown cover .

Alth9ough I have Breakdown cover, I have only used it once when I locked my keys in my car - DOH - and did not need a courtesy car, although it is included within my breakdown cover.

On the various occasions when I have had a Courtesy car, it has been Insured by the suppliers Motor Trade Insurance, without charge but with me being responsible for the Claims Excess.

I'm not really asking about insurance - a little difficult to explain hence why I am enquiring on here before talking to insurance companies, as they will probably tell me what they think I want to hear.

The scenario - Say I purchase car insurance with courtesy car & breakdown cover included, would my insurers give me a courtesy car if I have a callout for a breakdown / recovery? ie the car doesn't get fixed by the road and has to stay at a garage.

I'm NOT asking - how the courtesy car is insured, or how it is dealt with if the courtesy car breaks down. Thanks for the replies though.

It depends on the level of cover offered. Some insurers will only offer basic recovery, whilst others will include the full monty. There is no standard they have to offer.

I have full recovery; European cover, overnight accommodation and hire car with my insurance, but other companies I looked at offered basic recovery with the option to upgrade, obviously at a price.

Trying to understand your post, i would say that the courtesy car is purely for accidents and would not be provided if you car breaksdown and has to spend some time at a garage leaving you without any transport. As others have said yoiu would need to speak with the insurer to get the full benefits identified. You may be able to courtesy car cover for breakdowns, but i would expect this to be subject to a higher premium.

Whilst there are variations between Insurers with minor tweaks to cover, the general position is as follows.

There are separate sections to a motor policy, and generally the cover(s) provided under one does not carry across to the other unless specifically detailed in the wording.

The courtesy car provision under the general comprehensive cover relates solely to provision of a courtesy car whilst your car is having the accident damage repaired.

Cover for breakdown, repair, recovery etc is a separate policy section and the provision of a courtesy car is a separate item of cover independent of the general provision under the accidental damage section and paid for separately.

(This cover is usually pretty limited, and is only intended as a "get you home" or "get to destination" cover, and is usually restricted to 24 or 48 hours, after which period you are responsible for any further hire charges.)

Most insurers over here have 7days automatic cover onto a courtesy car if your vehicle is an authorised (main dealer) workshop for repairs be it accident damage or break down.., where you dont even need to contact them.

I had a courtesy car when my parked Pajero was hit by a reversing artic. lorry. Pajeros were only just being imported here then so at first Tesco insurance gave me a 1.0 Corsa, then when their appointed garage messed up the repair ( reversed polarity on one of the 2 batteries shorting loads of electrics). After giving them a real bollo****g they authorised Enterprise car hire to give me a 3 month old 1.9 Passat which I had for nearly 6 weeks while they scourced replacement folding mirrors and retracting ariel,

Got breakdown with onward traval so if i breakdown a d they cant get me back on track on the side of the road, they will tow me home / garage and give me a car for 3days.

I have used this in the past, they came, saw my camshaft sensor had gone, towed me to my local mechanic and gave me a reference number to use at enterprise. Went to the airport enterprise (whichever is open and closest to you, being late on a sunday airport was the only one open) and drove away in a vauxhall astra for 3days and returned no hassle / quibble. Only thing is you have to make your own way to the car pick up point. This is sll included in my rac premium plan

On the contrary i have had a BMW dealer breakdown and car cover, process was near enough identical bar getting me a brand new 120d msport for 3 days...
