Anyone Had KKK Turbo Whine?

Featured Replies

From the KKK's reputation i'm sure most have

When i bought my VRS around 5 months ago, there was a stage it hadn't been started for around 3 months.
Before that it was fine, but after i started it from sitting so long the turbo seemed to have a fair bit of a whine.

Being silly, i got it mixed up with whistle from my last PD130 so i had it on full boost countless times since.
I've noticed with the extra cold weather now it's especially noisy on a cold start. Once it warms up it's not as noisy.

I'm pricing up a replacement just now but wondered if anyone had a whine as bad as this and if they did, how long the turbo lasted before it died?

Keeping it sub 2k rpm when cruising just now and tickling the throttle during acceleration.

I had a similar noise on my pd150 turbo running about 180bhp. Once warm the noise pretty much went away until I was past 4k, I took the turbo inlet pipe off and found this

if you a bit handy with tools checking the compressor should only take 30 mins or so. I carried on driving mine for 3000 miles until I stuck a standard turbo on then sold the car shortly after. But the garret units are a lot stronger.

A second hand pd150 turbo can be had for under £200 these days if you fancy upgrading

Mine has whine first thing when starting from cold but not as loud as yours, doesn't last long then it goes quiet once the engine starts to warm up, then just what I would say is a normal whistle on boost. Could it be some play in the shaft that's worse when cold?

I've a got a few other mods already on it so thinking of having a look shortly to inspect the shaft & blades and then if it's pretty bad i'll go the GTB1756 hybrid route i think.

That's what i was thinking as well. It's on 123k, original turbo and about 70k+ miles of being remapped to 180ish bhp so there's no shame but just hope i can use it for a while longer until i can arrange getting it replaced.

With the gtb im sure it will require a different downpipe, oil feed and intercooler adapter. It does with the 2260 anyhow. A good hybrid will run 230bhp all day and is a bolt on job. Something to think about maybe.

Well, it's one of the Xman GTB1756 hybrids and i think he calls it the GT17/56 instead.

The exhaust side of the turbo has the same housing as the PD150 1749vb so it's a direct bolt on

Good for 230bhp but i'd probably want it dialed back to 220 and lower torque so not too smokey

Yep, thats what i fitted on mine, went on a treat and remapped to 220bhp no problem, that was a smooth map for the clutch also, had more to give really.

straight bolt on apart from the turbo intake pipe needed to be slighly bigger since the intake is much larger, was about £7 from ebay for a reducer silicone pipe.

other than that everything els bolted straight up.

Mines been doing same for a while now I just drive it as normal lol but thinking of darkside kit to get to around 220, anyone upgraded to this sort of power but using standard clutch ? As I don't want to go off is helix etc

I've just ordered a standard Sachs clutch & DMF from Darkside and it's also listed as suitable for the PD150 and the PD160 in the Ibiza Cupra, so obviously it can handle more power than the PD130 puts out but not sure how it would fair with 220bhp and xxx amount of torque! Probably gonna order a new turbo this week as a preventative and for piece of mind as mine is starting to whine more especially when cold and I don't want to risk it blowing to bits and firing shrapnel into the engine! As you'll have to make sure every last bit is out or it could knacker a new turbo.

I was going through my car's service history today checking it all and what's interesting is although it's 2006 Fabia, it has a receipt for a hybrid turbo and some other stuff (including custom remap) from Jabbasport in 2007.

This is from the original owner and the person i bought it from seemed unaware of this.

I'll need to check if it's a hybrid turbo fitted as mentioned because if it is then i can't swap it directly for a KKK again without getting another remap. If it is a hybrid then it means it's done around 100k miles which isn't bad at all.

I think 220 is fine on a standard clutch if it's good condition and the torque is toned right down, It will die quick if you launch it aggressively though or change gears the same way.

Mines has a Helix SMF, Allard EGR & cooler delete, Forge FMIC and Milltek turbo back so would make sense someone back then put a hybrid on it.
