Mio A201 Sat Nav & CoPilot Software

Featured Replies

I need a new windows mobile based palmtop mainly for work and have a

Is that the new one out with built in sat nav receiver? If so it looks good. The only other one I know with the phone and receiver built in is the Ipaq 6500 series - but I have heard that the receiver is not very good on it. It comes with Tom Tom, which I understand has very poor Irish (North and South) coverage - but that may have changed - may be worth checking.

Just read via Global Postioning Systems website that they are experiencing difficulties with Tom Tom and Co Pilot software installation. OOPS!!!!!!

See attached link:http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/mio-a201-pocket-pc-including-car-kit-description.html

I was thinking about the A201 but that has now been put on hold, but the new TomTom One has had a very good write up:http://www.mytomtomgo.com/review_tomtom-one.php

I am thinking of waiting till just after Christmas, then buying one, I am sure there will be some good deals on offer.:)

Let me know what you are getting as we appear to be wanting the same thing.

I have already got it a few months ago. I bought an Ipaq 6340 combined PDA and phone. It has built in bluetooth, Wifi, and quad band phone but no sat nav receiver. I combine it with a Parrot 3300 combined bluetooth car kit and sat nav receiver and Brodit charger mount. This is great because phone and sat nav go through the car audio so I can use steering volume controls etc. Also everything built in so no ugly dangling leads and cigarette lighter adaptors.

I quite liked the Tom Tom 500 & 700 because of their ability to also act as a bluetooth car kit. the problem was that I would have to have bought a new bluetooth phone anyway, because I use non-contract phones (much better deal overall). I ended up getting my kit cheaper than buying TT500 and phone. And Ive got an all in one (rather than having to lug around separate sat nav and phone) and a PDA as well. However still not cheap.

I am not sure that the Tom Tom 1 can act as car kit as well, so it would not have suited me. However it is supposed to be a good unit and overall I am pleased with Tom Tom software.

The Mio uses Windows Mobile 5, which did have difficulty with installing TT5 - it was Ok once installed but needed a fix around to install. However as I understand it that problem has been fixed by the latest version of TT that can be downloaded from their site. However I suggest you could try posting query in the forums at www.pocketgpsworld.com and see if anybody knows the problem.

Thanks for the advice folks but took delivery of a Mio A201 today. I didn't want to pay the extra for the Miomap software I had never heard of and I want Copilot. TT5 has crap Ireland street level mapping I understand whereas Co-Pilot has excellent coverage. Copliot 6 is £140 so need to start saving.

Can anyone suggest where I might get hold of some cheap sat nav software to get this thing running in the meantime?

If your considering Mio try Medion as well- they are the same company badged differently!

www.medion.co.uk I believe!
