Replacing ECU

Featured Replies

Hello there, questions regarding replacing a broken ecu.
Can you replace the ecu of a car with a used one?
Or does it have to be a completely new one?
I understand that it will need software, but ecu:s for some cars will not work when they are "bound" to another car.

So I want to doublecheck it before I buy a used one and potentially waste money :).

Not that I have any experince with swapping an ECU but when I though I was having trouble with my Mondeo ST TDCi, i tried these guys:

Depending on the damage they can refurb the ECU and can be cheaper than buying a new one.

Failing that you would have to get an ECU from the exact same spec of car (maybe one being scrapped) and find someone who can reprogram it.
