Brake disc shield and warning lights

Featured Replies

Another niggly issue appeared today, great. Car developed a metallic rattle from the rear, sounded like (and what I thought it was) my exhaust had come loose and was resting on a cross member, not long after this we started hearing a scraping noise, just as my tyre pressure warning light came on, great, a puncture I thought. I limped on to a garage forecourt that was a few metres away and set about inspecting the car :

Tyres and pressures all ok

Exhaust solid

Brake pads ok

Discs ok... Oh hang on a minute.....

Spotted a fresh score line on the near side rear disc brake shield, felt a little loose too. Thought a stone may have got in there as it wasn't at this stage touching the disc, the off side rear felt loose too so I thought that this was normal.

Further investigation underneath I found that the heat shielding (?) above the rear box on exhaust had also come loose (hence the rattling noise, or so I thought)

Got back in the car and started up, however not only was the tyre pressure warning light showing, the ABS light and TCS lights were too, Bugger!

As we were in Church Stretton and planning on going up the Burway (v steep Singletrack road for those who don't know it) plus a long drive home I wasn't prepared to mess around so a call to Green Flag.

When they came they took off the NSR wheel and inspected the shield, the retaining bolt had corroded causing the shield to flex and hit the disc, managed to persuade it back and held in place with a zip tie! Great.... Took it for a test drive, fault lights still there, scraping still there. Bugger.

Plugged in his computer and got no error message, plugged in another computer, again no error message. Lights still showing.

Checked the OSR wheel, exact same problem with this one, the shield was actual even more loose. He went about it with the same bodge, erm I mean temporary fix.

Took for a longer drive error codes still showing but rattles and scrapes completely stopped. Again nothing came up on his computers. He checked for any wheel bearing issues, all were fine.

As the car was safe to drive we went in our way (up the Burway but not down it) and 40 miles back home with the warning lights still showing.

So, after that long ramble (sorry!) what I need to ask is..... What's wrong? Why are the error messages still showing and why didn't they show up? Possibly be the sensor(s) that are buggered? And most importantly how much is this all going to cost me? Say 2 shields (can't see why can't reuse them?) bolts, sensors and time?

Thanks as always

You need someone with vcds to do a scan for you to identify the specific fault location, although the fault sounds like either dodgy abs ring or sensor.

Just doing some googling (search on here not working for me) and abs ring/hub coming up a lot. Hmm hoping it's not this

Do the lights come on when you start the car or do they come on after you hit 15kmh or around that. Ive found if the lights come on straight away its the sensor fault but if they come on after a certain speed its the hub ring. But a scan with vcds will clear that up they sound like a major job but there not ive done both my hub rings costing me around 30quid each and 20-30minutes each to do the sensor is a bit dearer but also not that hard a job to do.

The ABS is on straight away, the other 2 light up when driven (at what I now assume is 15km/h)

I couldn't do the job myself, I round bolts off by just looking at them
