Fourth Gear!!!

Featured Replies

Hi

Does anyone have problems with getting into fouth gear in their Octy II, Elegance, 2.0 TDi. It never happens in any other gear, but sometimes changing into fourth is difficult, like I haven't put the clutch in properly, only I am sure I do?

Thanks

Al.

P.S. Wonder how much Skoda would trade against a new VRS!!

I can say I have done this, the same feeling as if you haven't clutched properly, but I can't remember if it is always 4th gear. When I first done it I thought I had lost the clutch:O

Engaging 3rd feels a bit clunky on my gearbox but no touble actually changing into any gear.

Does this only happen when the car is cold?

In my mk1 Octy vRS the gearbox can be a little stiff until the oil has properly warmed up. I sometimes have difficulty engaging 3rd or 4th for a few miles after starting from cold but when I have driven for a bit all is silky smooth again.

had a similar problem on my previous octy 1, but reverse was the problem gear. This was easily solved by adjusting the linkage.

not sure if there is the same setup on the mk2 but on the mk1 there are two linkage rods, one controls lateral movement and one fore & aft.

these rods had a treaded adjustment section and a little trial and error adjustment may cure the problem - but make note of the original setting so you can return to them if there is no improvement.

Ok, thanks for the comments.

I may ask the dealer to check next time I take it in.

Just very odd that it is only in 4th and only very occasionally. Doesn't seem to matter if the car is hot or cold either.

The Octy 1 vRS gearbox was much clunkier than the Mk 2 FSI, in all gears I found. One of the main reasons I changed. But I sometimes have trouble from 5th to 6th in the new one when I'm pushing the revs high. Having said that, at only about 3600 miles I expect I'm nowhere near run-in yet so far as the gearbox is concerned.

My car's done about 3200 miles. For the first few weeks I occasionally had trouble with fourth - I suspect that it was in gear but I never dared pop the clutch in case of nasty grinding noises.

Since then it's only happened once or twice.

My Octy I vRs had problems selecting most gears. Spoke to someone about it (he shall remain nameless  ) . He suggested changing the gearbox oil. Took it to my local dealership, they had heard of problems with some Octy II's but not Mark I's.

Anyway, they changed the oil under warranty - to a thinner oil - and I havent had any problems since.

Might be an idea to try that - I think I still have product codes for the replacement oil if anyone is interested

I remember having a similar problem, when new, with 2nd to 3rd in my Primera GT - dealer said "you have to wait for the sharp corners to get knocked off !" [i assume he meant the sharp edges of the gear teeth.] It did kind of loosen up after about 8000 miles. Wonder if you can still use the old Molyslip in modern gearboxes?
