Notchy Gear Changes on vRS

Featured Replies

Gearbox reconditioned approx 15k ago with bearings & synchros replaced. This was 2 years ago last month at a cost of approx £550
SMF & upgraded clutch

I've noticed that when i'm driving my car going up gears is always fine and never an issue, but when trying to change down gears when in motion it feels notchy and sometimes feels like you need to double clutch it.

Has anyone else had this? If so, what caused it?

Thinking of doing the following
Bleed release bearing
Replace gearbox oil (perhaps they put the wrong stuff in after rebuild?)
Check if needs shimmed
Adjust gear linkage if possible
Cry

Any other suggestions or advise most welcome.

Easy job to do is reset the gear linkage, there are a lot of guides on youtube on how to do this

While youre doing that check the condition of the shifter bushes at the gearbox end as if they have perished this may make it feel sloppy? Im going to buy some solid draft42 bushes soon as i have read good reviews about them really improving gear change feel

It is worth getting the oil changed, I had my box refurbed ages ago and the gear change was notchy, especially when cold, however with the correct oil it's much better.

Oh yes. Draft42 bushes &mounting bushes was mentioned to me the other day think will try these out. Not too expensive are they?

How's it feel now after fitting?

Is it possible to replace these bushes OEM?

Try the oil first. Just make sure you can undo the fill plug before you do the drain plug. I've fitted the draft 42 and the shift is more positive but as I have solid mounts its also a bit notchy as I can feel the gears meshing through the stick.

Very easy to change too.

Ye I'll try oil first.

Car going in for some subtle upgrades over weekend and will see how it responds to them.

Always felt like the gearbox feels flimsy when shifting gears compared to previous cars I've had.

I've got the Draft 42 shifter bushes and the others on the bracket fitted to mine, made a nice difference when I fitted them :)

The trouble with the OE ones is they are a 'voided' bush,it's like the console bush in design, which everyone replaces for a solid bush!

yeh, I just have a memory that the upgraded ones were a little on the pricey side, and if oem bushes can be had for a couple of quid, it might be as well just getting them.

As if its a pretty easy job, its not like the console bushes where its a PITA job to fit.

did anyone ever do a fitting guide?

The standard bush is part of the plastic gear change cable end,you have to cut the standard bush out of the cable end to fit the Draft42 bush.

So if you want OEM you will need to buy the complete cable end,and still end up with a voided sloppy rubber bush! :)

ahhh, one of mine was recently replaced anyway (have to change the selector mech - it comes with one). I was thinking it was a different bush, as i remember on the group buy there were 2 sets to be fitted to each car

The Draft42 ones go in the selector cable ends, and make the biggest improvement to change.

The Verdict ones replace the mounting bracket rubber mounts.

ah right, now i am somewhat tempted! I take it you've done this to yours/are a fan?

However, first on the cards (after fixing it) it to get some new gearbox oil in it.

Yeah fitted both in mine.

Does improve the feel a lot,the main thing I noticed is if you put the car in gear and then move the lever side to side etc as standard there is a lot of movement, once these uprated bushes were fitted that reduced by approx 50-75% I would guess :)
