Going to be doing big mileage, what should I watch for?

Featured Replies

My '04 1.9 TDi 130 currently has 88k on the clock but this is all about to change. After being unemployed for a short while I've managed to find a (really good) job but I'll be doing about 200 miles per day as a result.

The Octavia had a new clutch and flywheel back in December, along with belts, pump and a service. She passed the MOT at the end of February with advisories on the CV boots (worn but not split), a suspension bush (worn but no excessive play) and brakes (worn but not excessively pitted etc.) so these will be getting done asap.

Question is, as the mileage creeps up what should I be looking out for?

Pheasants.

In all seriousness who is to know? Any car is only ever as good as it's last mile without a problem, no matter what the mileage. I assume most of this is on the motorway which is the easiest for a car anyway. Obviously it will just be harder on general wear and tear. The car only has 88k on the clock anyway so keep up the servicing and don't worry. The octy tdi will do mega miles anyway, they were taxis for a reason.

indeed , ^^^^^ 88k isn't much for this engine, it should run 188k - 288k without much issue.... the taxis go through gearboxes, but if motorway driving that shouldn't be too bad.... engines stay the same.... hell my petrol 1.8t vRS has done a happy 155k, and is going strong on stage one, doesn't use any fluids, feels and sounds great !

for the PD ... my biggest recommendation would be oil changes with "proper" oil...... keep that going... cams can wear, give it a flush at service time then use the correct oil to change , keep  up with the cambelt and water pump, and basically thats it!! roll on the next 100k ! :cocktail:

Thanks guys! :) Yes, it'll be 90% motorway. I did know these engines can take lots of miles, my mate has a 170k+ mk4 Golf 130 and it was one of the reasons I bought the car. I just wondered if there was any gotchas the mechanics and taxi boys looked out for, which your average punter might miss.

I'll definately be keeping on top of the servicing, with a garage I've used for years and trust to use the correct fluids.

Would you go to 20,000 miles on fully synthetic oil before an oil change on a PD?

Would you go to 20,000 miles on fully synthetic oil before an oil change on a PD?

I wouldn't , when I had my PD130 (mark I fabia vRS) I used to change every 10k....... having said that my octy was a motorway muncher, and serviced as per computer, the record is between 16- 18,000 miles per service, and is going strong at 155k....

my fiat (common rail 1.9 deisel 170bhp mapped, originally 130bhp) was 18k service intervals, I had that car from new, and did about 110k in it , and only serviced at 18k, and that ran perfectly.... (and was a driving school car! :o )

I still did a change every 10k in my PD though! lol... the oil just seemed to get thick and black!

Wow...and here I am servicing every 5k - 8k!

I was going to ask - how's your gearbox looking? Mine is problematic in 1st and 2nd - more so when cold. Linkage adjustment didn't seem to help an awful lot :(

my gearbox is spot on... "as new" .. (works perfect , no idea if it has been changed at all, didn't see it in the history, but if most of those miles have been motorway, its sitting in 5th, not like it was used as a taxi! lol) it has the polybushed dogbone mount (which improves the change) an almost new VR6 clutch and G60 SMF .

edit: I would service (oil change)  a PD more than the petrol engine thats in mine, but I wouldn't be afraid to go to 10 between oil changes.
