Hi & advice please. Auto stop-start system on a DSG, clutch

Hi I have a new Octavia automatic DSG gearbox. I don't like the stop-start system. I know how to turn it off so no major problem. If I turn it off, am I wearing out the clutch if I have to stop at traffic lights without changing into neutral ??  Thanks

Not sure about dsg boxes but it's fine on a standard auto box and I bet there are plenty of dsg models without stop start so I can't imagine any problems...

Apparently with DSG if you only apply a light pressure to the brakes the stop/start doesn't kick in. 

I stick mine in neutral or park if waiting at lights and the start/stop is off.  Think there are threads on here that say keeping it in D when stopped will wear the clutch pack.

If start/stop is disabled it disconnects the clutch pack when the footbrake is on, so no wear. If you look at the rev counter you will see the revs drop to c.800 RPM with your foot on the clutch - then when you take your foot off they rise to c.1,000 RPM and the car creeps away - good way to make a smooth start.

Depends which DSG. On the 7 speed the clutch is completely disengaged. On the 6 speed the clutch remains partially engaged but as it is lubricated with oil then there is no risk of wear.

Hi - as per LHVRS, lightly brake when the car comes to a holt so stop-start doesn't come on. I tend to do do this for short stops only. If it's any longer than say 10 seconds push the brake harder to engage start-stop or chuck into Park to prevent wear. If the cars cold or for another reason you don't want start-stop to engage put in N

It's good practice to put it in Neutral when stopped for any length of time. If you're concerned about DSG clutch wear why not, but probably the clutch will be fine anyway.

 

Does having it in Neutral prevent the start/stop from stopping the engine? I don't know 'cos I always have that switched off. 

Lightly braking doesnt work on ours, it cuts out before its even come to a stop - its quite irritating to be honest.

As far as I know, all the automatic gearboxes are designed to stay in the D mode all the time you drive. There is no need to switch to N; I've even heard that doing so on a regular basis may bring more harm than help.

All in all, the start/stop gimmick is a new feature, younger than the DSG (e.g. my older Superb mkII had DSG and no S&S) and I cannot see how would it improve the performance / longevity of the DSG, regardless of the setting on the latter...contrary being not so impossible though :rofl:

I'm trying to get along with S&S, but when I consider the fact that it makes sense (read: saves the fuel) only when stop is longer than 30...45s, it's rather seldom that it really makes sense to have this feature active.

Don't put it in Park at lights. If you get rear-ended you'll need a new gearbox on top of any other damage you get. Neutral and handbrake like in a manual is better.

Agree! One of the common mistakes is to use the P to actually hold the car in place. Handbrake is there to do that. The P selection causes the "parking pawl" to lock the gearbox output shaft.

It's just a small pin that locks the shaft and all the other parts of transmission that bring the torque from that point all the way to the wheels. In other words - every piece of that chain may get damaged if things go wrong way; all of them also suffer additional wear if P is used as a parking brake.

Yeah I am new to the DSG myself. I made the mistake once of pushing the selector lever all the way to P when coming to a stop in a parking place. Was only doing walking pace but car jerked to a halt and I knew it wasn't right. I won't do this again, but I was surprised there is no mechanism to stop it happening - unless I was already going slowly enough so it let me. 

The only auto I've driven with stop/start was a Touareg 3.0 TDI. Found it very easy to control when the stop-start with the brake pedal pressure. It was very quick/keen to shut the engine off though. Should be a bigger delay between pressing hard on the pedal and it shutting off. Very quick to fire back up though.

 

Was annoyed with some airport parking we used last week. Got back to the car and they'd parked it up and just put it in park without the handbrake on. Was on a slight down hill and was resting on the pawl (was hard to pull the lever out of P).

I guess that this might be necessary in emergency situations where you don't care if you damage your gearbox or not.
