rumble/buzzing front driver side

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Got a slight problem with my Octy 1.9 tdi 4x4, had a rumble/buzz/hum from my front drivers side area. It happens when i'm turning left, and also i can reproduce it when i'm moving the steering wheel very slightly to and from from straight (only about 2-3 degrees).

At the time i also needed new brake discs and pads, so in it went to the garage. The mechanic reckoned it was the drivers side wheel bearing that had overheated due to the state of the discs and pads.

The bearing only had about 4500 miles on it but he's always been pretty sound in his judgment so went with his call.

Anyway fast forward to 5 days later, post disc/pads/bearing replacement and picking up a rather hefty bill! Drove the 60 miles to work and lo and behold the sound is still there. Bugger.

Spoke to the mechanic again and he's come up with the idea the flywheel might need replacing, ker - bloody- ching!!!! For the garage!!

Would the flywheel cause a rumble when turning left?? I'm thinking not but who am i?? I just fix helicopters me.

Any idea/(sensible)suggestions please?

Does the noise only happen when the car is moving? As it could be CV joint?

Other steering related parts I can think of is ball joint, top mount and also worth checking the coil spring is not broken.

Sound only appears when its going over about 23 mph, very quietly then gets louder. I don't mean loud enough to have to turn the radio up but a consistent background humming/buzzing. And only when turning left and then back to centre.

Coil is still good will have to check out the ball joint etc.

It sounds much like a quieter version of the wheel bearing when it starts rumbling, i was wondering if there is a bearing on the drive shaft somewhere which might have some play in it?

I tried dipping the clutch pedal in/no throttle and the sound is still there.

Turning to the right from central steering wheel position the sound disappears.
