can the springs and /or shocks/bump stops  be replaced/checked  without disturbing the rest of it and therefore  needing to be  reset  p.s. one bumpstop seems to be crumbling @ five years old   is this common

What you mean by "reset"? Any suspension work will need a tracking/alignment check, ideally on a Hunter laser machine.

One of my bump stops had completely come away

Any wear such as perished bump stops el have caused your alignment to move so putting new ones will require having it all realigned anyway. Well worth the 40 or 50 pounds it'll cost. As above take it somewhere with laser alignment.

And the big MUST give it time to settle.as you will be going back again and again.

Dampers and bump stops won't change ride height or alignment in any other way (as long as other parts aren't disturbed along the way, which I can't see why they should be).

 

Springs may change ride height, which will change the static alignment, but you could measure before and after (e.g. centre of wheel to top of wheel arch) and if it hasn't changed then nothing to worry about. But why are you worried about them?

 

None of this is to say checking alignment may not be a good idea, just not necessary as a result of working on / changing those parts.

thanks --that's what I thought ---I haven't take a look yet as it isn't my estate,  it's for a friend I promised to fix it @ parts cost only,  and a look at the springs while I'm there-----I saw somewhere the standard bs's are prone to disintegration as his have I understand,  is it worth spending the extra on  on the  poly equivalent?  

If you are just changing a bump stop that is all you'll need to do.

Remove strut complete (shock & top mount) undo top mount change bump stop,

refit top mount, rebolt strut to car.

the only hard bit is the bottom shock bolt, awkward would be a better description.

 

No alignment needed. but is is good practice to get it done at least every 18 months

I did it without removing the shock from the car. Just undid the top mount, compressed the shock, removed the top mount replaced the bump stop, then reassembled.

I had to remove mine,as when i compressed it like you said,It kept rising back up,which i think it's suppose to do.

If your quick that way can work.
