Cornering fog lights.

Featured Replies

I've read a lot on here about cornering fog lights but don't understand their purpose.

I know that the lights can be set to brighter or dimmer dependent on the steering wheel turns but what purpose does this serve?

It's just to give you more light where the headlights aren't able to provide it. I find it most useful in villages where there is a combination of poor lighting with sharp turns and people wondering about.

From Skoda:

Cornering front fog lights is perfect for urban driving. In the difficult junctions, the fog lamps illuminate the space where driver is about to turn. It is also very useful for parking manoeuvres in the dark, during which there is a risk of damaging the bodywork or “curbing” the wheels. Fog lamp also illuminates the space besides the vehicle during U-turns.

The principle of the Cornering front fog lights is automatic lighting up of right or left fog lamp while cornering. This illuminates wide space to the side of the vehicle, in the angle of -30° to +60° from the vehicle’s direct axis, and 0° to -10° vertically.

This function is active in slow speeds of up to 40km/h. The fog lamps are turned on and off gradually, so they naturally complement the space illuminated by the headlamps in front of the car.

Thank you.

Strangely enough, although they are activated as standard from the factory it's an offence to use them whilst driving on UK roads.

Says who?

What makes having 1 Front Fog light coming on automatically as you turn a corner when visibility is not less than 100 meters OK, and you are in some town or village and have sidelights & dipped beam on already.

but having 2 fog lights on is wrong.  According to the Highway Code.

Then what is smart with 2 front fog lights coming on automatically as you reverse & without any driver input in conditions that are not poor visibility,

where if you needed extra lights and nobody was there to be dazzled you could switch on Full Beam?

Or you could even switch on the front fog lights because your eye sight is poor.

But then we know all about them being Type Approved, Construction & Use etc,

it is just that some EU Legislation is at odds with the UK Traffic Laws and the Highway Code.
