Auxillary belt seated right?

Featured Replies

BLT engine, renewed my aux belt about 500 miles ago to cure a cold start whistle, which worked. But I've noticed that on the tensioner pulley the belt is off to the outside by about 2mm. I've never removed the pulley and it seems fine, is this a problem? It's not popped off yet. Didn't notice if original belt was like it or not, it is on the other pulleys fine.

Anyone got any ideas? This is bugging me now

Maybe a picture might help us understand your problem.

Will post one later. Basically it's off centre on the tensioner pulley, about 2mm off on the wheel arch side.

So long as it's not hanging over the edge of the pulley, it sounds like it's fine.

Left side as you look standing from the front sticks out by a couple of mm, but evenly all the way round. I'm mainly worried about it putting uneven wear on the pulley and the belt itself. It's only a couple of mm but it doesn't seem right.

I've put the original oem belt back on and it's right on the edge of the pulley rather than overhanging slightly, cold start whistle has returned. Will check again as it could be the tensioner arm playing up. Think I'll try a new oem belt and see what happens.

For anybody who is interested it seems this has been remedied with a new genuine belt and a new tensioner pulley (SKF). It looks as though the tensioner arm was locking occasionally as in going to release it's tension one time it wouldn't budge. This locking (perhaps as wheel moves to take up slack when loading the battery) coupled with a tiny amount of play in the wheel (only the slightest bit more than normal) seems to have been enough to allow the belt to wander off centre, made worse by the extra tension of a new belt.

Have to say I'm very impressed with the SKF unit, we know there's nowt wrong with their bearings and this feels sweet as a nut. And only £32, cheapest gen one was looking like £43.
