Black smoke at low revs

Featured Replies

So the car has covered just over the 200,000 mark but drives really well still and to me it has a lot of power still...

But.... at low revs black smoke puffs out the back... At high revs it's fine.

My mechanic has looked at all the hoses and replaced one...

It has been a tad better.. but still has the issue.

There is also a slight "hick up" at low revs

Nothing shows on the diagnostic meter?

Any input?

Thanks

id try full service inc fuel filter & run a good fuel cleaner to a tank full of fuel, that should clear it up or least help a lot

I'd imagine at those miles the Injectors are a bit worn.

Black smoke usually indicates unburnt fuel.

Avoid really low revs and big throttle openings.

Here's to the next 200,000 miles. :coffee:

Thanks!

Check the DPF status in Advanced Measuring Blocks: ash and soot loading especially. If black smoke is getting through I'd be worried about the state of the DPF.

Ok...thanks .... although wouldnt this show in any read out?

new injectors and tetraclean?

It's not part of the OBD/EOBD protocol so if you're using a generic scan tool you won't see it.

With VCDS (or any VAG specific scan tool) there's a function called Advanced Measuring Blocks. On the engine controller it'll let you read a bunch of parameters related to the DPF's health - IIRC there are 7 or 8 of them.

Havent got the breakdown yet as I had some other very minor work for the MOT/Council Compliance.... (the council compliance is a higher standard test) including new fire extinguisher.

But my mechanic gave me the options of sending the injectors off to a local diesel specialist.. which would be about a 10 day turn around... keep in mind that it is a licensed taxi... so that was out of the question..

Or having after market ones at £175 + vat  or proper spec ones at £285 each + VAT .. which I went for.... so that is £1386 + the labour for this at £40 + vat per hour

Although this seems expensive.. the car would not be worth a penny as it was with no MOT.

But.. I have had the cab since new.. its been serviced on the dot so I know the full history... body is perfect.. and you wouldnt know it had been a cab on the inside.

Plus.. I was thinking of retiring it this year anyway.. and was going to keep it for my own private use.....
