Drivers kick plate trim plastic lose keep it dump?

I would like to obtain an opinion and help from other Briskodians on a matter troubling my 2005 MK2 195k high miler.

The black plastic kick/sill plate covers have been lose for some time. Looks like they are held in with double sided tape. Well half of them are now the front half is no longer stuck. I took a look underneath and there is what appears to be a nice colour coded metal panel. So other than avoiding scratching what is the actual point of these pieces of trim?

Question is do I keep them, reattach or remove them completely cleaning the remaining glue remnants off?

All other doors trims are fine.

However the NS front is showing paint bubbling just on the outside edge of the same trim.

I would suggest with the motorway driving I do that these areas become water traps.

I don't want to spend lots of money on this car with the miles and age. Few things going wrong, now I have got to this mileage in relation to wear and tear. 2 more years and 250k would be nice to see, before I go for something newer and lower miles. Opinions and suggestions welcomed on this minor issue.

They don't do much other than protecting the paint work from getting scratched. Mine are just painted so think they may be extras added by the previous owner. So up to you but if water is getting trapped and causing it to rust I would be tempted just to remove them so the water beads off properly instead of getting trapped underneath.

I'd either leave them as they are or stick them back down.

Given its just the two on the drivers door. I may try sticking down. Failing that those will be coming off. Thanks for suggestions. Now where do I get the sticky tape from?
