looking for new taxi 1.6 CR TDI VS 2.0 CR TDI reliability & has to be euro 5

Featured Replies

which one is best suited for the job and most reliable. I look forward to your answers.

it has to be euro emission 5, can someone tell me what year to look from

There isn't anything in it from a reliability perspective.

There are a few vRS's being used as taxi's so I'm sure one of the guys will be along soon.

I guess it depends on whether your driving enjoyment or the comfort of your passengers is the most important.

I'd imagine a vRS on 18's four or five up with a boot full of luggage isn't going to be as comfortable as a 1.6 on 16" alloys?

But if it is your office and you are spending hours and hours a day sat in it then you might want the driving enjoyment of the sportier suspension and cosmetic tweaks of the vRS.

I'd go for an Elegance or L&K but I prefer comfort and toys over outright speed and handling.

Why not a non-vRS 2.0, you are currently looking at the smallest and largest diesel options, wouldn't it be better to go for somewhere in the middle with the 150bhp 2.0 litre?

sorry I am not looking at a Vrs. just basic 1.6 vs 2.0 both common rail

Oops, sorry I misread the"vs" in the thread title as "vrs"

In a 1.6 Tdi you could do 20 jobs a day, in a Vrs you could do 50.

Vrs all the way

The Skoda Superb II (I know this is the Octavia thread, but...) was always euro 5 and was available until September 2015 (long after other models went euro 6). As the model has just changed it's fantastic value at the moment.

The 1.6 CR is very economical but beware of the ride height of the Greenline version - if you have a full car speed humps will be a problem!

Re Reliability - Many think the 2.0 is the better engine however:-

The 1.6 CR can have EGR issues (so can the 2.0CR!)

The 1.6(Superb)  has a SMF flywheel  - The 2.0 has a DMF flywheel

The 1.6(Superb) has an external clutch slave cylinder - The 2.0 ( 6 speed) has a concentric clutch slave cylinder (goes wrong , and expensive gearbox off fix)

The 2.0 has the self destructing Sachs clutch pressure plate that can fail and machine through the gearbox casing - very expensive new gearbox repair

I am using the 1.6 octavia green line estate as a taxi

Decided to get the 1.6 version over the 2.0 as most of my work is town based. My old mondeo was a 2.0 litre good as it was on motorways it always seemed like it was choking itself to death in town with the soot build up ( egr, turbo etc )

I think the 1.6 is an ideal compromise for town and a few out of town jobs we get.

I have just switched from longlife servicing to standard servicing as I believe 20,000 miles between servicing on a taxi is a bit excessive

I always wonder if the oil from longlife servicing degrades to such a point and then gets burnt by the engine is a cause of the problems owners are getting with the dpf filter

The 1.6 is the more economical engine. It's still plenty powerful for taxi work.

They both have a dual mass flywheel by the way.

They also both have a DPF of course but think the 1.6 is likely to be kinder to it than the bigger and thirstier 2.0.

And as above if you go for a Greenline just be mindful of the lower suspension... might be best looking for an Elegance model.

Indeed it's the Superb II 1.6 cr 5 speed that has a SMF but the Octavia II 1.6 cr has a DMF - as far as I know but it can vary!

However I never had any problems with the DPF in my lower powered Superb I 1.9pd100 in 170k miles (original clutch, flywheel, battery , exhaust) - similar power/torque figures to the 1.6 CR

I got a 1.9 tdi (2010) however have gone through 2 duel mass fly wheels in 19 months or 40,000 miles so abit of a pain there. other than that it seems fine.

however I know nothing about cars! yes I'm a taxi driver but a female one who knows little

There is a SMF flywheel conversion available for the 1.9tdi

somebody told me this last week, ive never heard of any of my mechanics in the past even mention a single mass flywheel. a garage mentioned this on Saturday as ive high idoling issues which they cant get on top of, however when I mentioned the egr black box thing got replaced by a 2nd hand one (electric brain thing, yes mine failed) he said ooh that's not the brain and you can get them 10 a penny from the local scrap yard, may be the case, but him saying that the part was not the brain of the vehicle when on here it clearly states in another thread that it is. sorry I'm digressing, it just made me alittle wary of that particular independent garage. will go for the single mass flywheel when its changed over at local VW specialist garage.

What happens when one finally goes, my engine currently sounds like somebody has left a spanner in there, but stops when I press in my clutch. it was only the scarey mechanic that suggested it was that. Nobody else mentioned a bloomin thing, just suggested clutches are an issue in the 1.9 (ive never in my life burnt out a clutch, just flywheels!)

Gonna look into this smf on the next service, providing the current one lasts me another 10,000 miles.

A rattle that dissappears when the clutch is dipped is a pretty surefire sign of Dual Mass Flywheel failure.

Really does sound like DMF I'm afraid. Be careful, WHEN it gives way it can take out the gearbox bellhousing - usually new gearbox job

My 1.6 tdi taxi got 200k and still strong but I start to use a DTUK tuning box to get more power and extra MPG.

2.0 engine more economical then 1.6 for sure.

Clutch on 140k and EGR on 100k. Thats all for 6 years of running every night
