Can i temp test greasing these up with something more accessible? 

I just use any decent silicone grease.

Basically anything other than copper slip/grease will work fine.

Ive switched to silicone grease when my red rubber grease ran out. Does the same job but cheaper and easier to get hold of

I already went ahead with this :P

 

And the only thing i had was teflon  cycle gear linkage grease. Its red so that must be ok :P

I though the red grease was to protect the rubber boots and seals and silicon grease was for sliding parts.

At least that's what I thought I remembered reading when I purchased them.
