Hi All,

I'm becoming increasingly aware of an engine rattle on my 2 litre tdi VRS. I can't decide if its me being paranoid or there is something genuinely wrong.

In my opinion it quite rattly at idle, a sort of tappety noise and also at the top end of the rev range. I know diesels are rattly but this seems a bit excessive...

Is this normal? How does everybody else's 2 litre tdi's sound?

All the time. I guess slightly more when cold but of course I would expect that.

I know exactly what you're talking about.

 

Something that annoys me about my car (which I've posted about previously).. engine sounds very unrefined (CUPA 2.0TDi CR EU5 MY2015).

 

It is of course worse when cold, but even when up to temperature if I'm stopped next to something tall and solid that bounces the sound back (a wall or large truck) the clacking noise is very apparent.

 

Hard acceleration is very unpleasant as it sounds like I'm screaming the nuts off an old normally aspirated Mercedes diesel (and I'd go so far as to say Massey Ferguson tractor if their rev range went as high), not something with an advanced common rail injection turbo powered unit.

 

Don't understand as to why, as the Golf GTD, Audi A3 and A4 with the same engine sound far more refined, so maybe it's something to do with the resonance of the engine bay.

Nookiebear, you describe it perfectly. So that makes 2 of us with the same gripe. Kinda comforting I guess that its probably not a fault but more likely just the way it it.

Trouble is, it actually makes me reluctant to ever put my foot down. Especially not in 1st or 2nd gear (I have DSG) . :-(

Just been out in mine. Not a long drive but had the windows open for some (while fighting against the brisk cold air) and then listened to it at idle in the pool car park.

Nothing rattly or tappet coming from mine.

Mine has only done 600miles so far so would presume it would be worse from new and slowly get better as parts mesh/wear in.

I would say the engine noise in my car is excellent compared with all the others I've owned.

Previously owned Mondeo & Focus diesels  for the last 10 years & currently also have a 320d.

 

Out of them all, the Octavia has the quietest & most refined engine sound.

It is still a diesel but sounds reasonably pleasant at idle & there are no harsh noises when accelerating.

I can't comment on the top end of the rev range, as I've never been over much 3k

 

Strangely I would say the 320d is the worst I have owned! This is really like a tractor & I expected the BMW engine to be much better.

 

 

Is the change in the last few weeks since the change of winter to summer diesel in the UK?

Modern diesel systems have learning functions which adjust the size of the pilot injection (which is used to control the combustion noise).

It's not so much it's changed in the last few weeks. I think it's always been there but my concern/awareness of it is becoming increasingly apparent.

To be fair my last car was a v10 tdi Touareg which was silky smooth and before that was a BMW 535d which was also smooth.

Perhaps it's just the smaller 4 pot diesels that sound rattly if not used to them.

I'd still love to do a comparison to another similar car though to put my mind at rest.

This is a common problem with four cylinder diesel engines - they are just a bit knocky.

 

With six cylinders and above they really sounds nice and to a point you struggle to even know they are tractor powered.

Herein the problem may lay...

 

My previous vehicle, which I sold after just 9 months because it was one of the worst quality pieces of $h1t I've ever owned, and I absolutely hated the fact it sounded like a knackered Kazakhstani tractor with a hole in the exhaust, was a Kia Sportage 2.0CRDi... but here's the kicker... immediately before that I'd spent the previous 3 years driving a 2010 Audi Q7 S-Line 3.0TDi V6... which (to use your words) was also silky smooth, sounded beautiful, and was near indiscernible as a diesel!

 

Maybe it's just that we develop some sort of 'reference' by which we judge all others following  :think:  !

Great post. Reading such could make one more paranoid that there may lie a problem with the engine.

Next we shall be comparing the quality of trim in the octavia to the trim in a veyron..as that to is owned by VAG and worrying that the octavia falls short on quality when compared so.

Stop worrying. I too think the diesel 4 is a little noisy but it's quiter than our focus diesel. If one wants a quieter car then opt for a petrol or instead of speccing endless optional skoda gimmicks go spend that money on a tesla.

There is a lot of blurb on here about how poorly insulated the octavia is and Road noise is a big topic, thus why be surprised that the diesel engine noise is quiet noticeable. The octavia is no louder than a dacia diesel.

Nothing to report here. Mines 1 year old and 40,000 miles on the clock.

I know I know I'm going to open a whole can of worms...

 

but, on my old -> PD <- 170 (so, way less clunkier than the CR engines), I couldn't almost hear the engine tick-over thanks to some HBn in my engine oil (and an extended training of about 200 miles of brisky drive per day on highway, which used to keep the engine very very clean  :devil:  )

Ive had my 2005 2.0 tdi Octavia for 50k now showing 145k on the clock. Engine is definitely louder and the thing next to the cam belt that moves is shaking all over the place. The engine is still strong and pulls very well. Does anyone know what that thing is that shakes at the left side as you look down near the front?

The end for the internal combustion engine is nigh.

 

Just to update this. The thing i was talking about was the auxiliary tensioner. May be because of failing bearings in the alternater etc, could be the tensioner itself. Will keep an eye on it as is liveable. I had another whooshing mechanical noise. That was a loose turbo hose. One ear was worn and was not seating properly.

i have a noticeable 'ticking' but only when i lift the bonnet/hood, its a much quieter beast on the road than my Golf 1.9 tdi BUT (and its a big but), the road noise is awful probably due to the saw toothing on my rear low profile tyres.

 

I've had the ticking before on VW diesel engines and its usually down to the belt tensioner. When i had the water pump changed i had the whole kit including belt, tensioner etc and noise disappeared.
