which sat nav

Son wants to get a sat nav system ...must be around

Tom Tom do a basic system for about the `199 don't they?

Failing that, you could always see what Staples are doing - unlikely place for Sat Nav, but they had half a dozen different models in two or three which where about 200.

I'm a big fan of the Navman iCN510 and 520 series (as i've got both now......don't ask...lol) but I believe the Tom Tom ones have a louder speaker and allow full six-digit postcode searches, whereas the Navman iCN510/520 is fairly quiet (over road noise @ 80 and a stereo....) and only does five digit postcode......

But, you can get a Navman in a pocket, but a Tom Tom would just make you appear, er....."agitated"...LOL!

I can only see two problems with the 320......

1. No PC Connection - so putting on speed camera databases and updates isn't going to be easy, if possible at all.......

2. No touchscreen, so all control is going to be through the buttons on the unit. An on screen keyboard for address entry is so much easier imo.

Does he have to get one right now? Prices won't be going up, and if he can hold on and save just bit more, get a full-featured unit......

JMPTW.....

Auto express did a test last week. I'll check it to see what was recommended for this price. I hear the TomTom one is great if you can stretch to £260 though.

I had a Navman icn320 -- it lasted 10 days!! -- and I hadn't even used it for a journey, so I replaced with a Tom Tom 300 -- absolutely fantastic peice of kit compared to the Navman.

If he has a windows mobile or CE based PDA, I can highly recommend CoPilot 6 Sat Nav software. I just got a Mio A201 PDA and Co-pilot 6. Cost around £380 delivered but it's brilliant and i've found the Navteq mapping much better than the last Tom Tom I saw in action.

damn those links don't work 2nd time round for some reason. If you can't get them to work give me a shout and i'll dig out the paper copy.

work fine

thanks for that .....big help

I'd go for the TomTom One if I were buying now. Smaller than the original TomToms, so more easily portable, good screen, clear speaker, full postcode search. Think PC World Online had them for £220 last week. Well worth the extra £20 IMO.

It isn't (possible that is). No external POIs accepted.

I would recomend you have a read of the forums at www.pocketgpsworld.com before buying.

I've just changed from a Garmin streetpilot 3 to tomtom5 running on a second hand PDA from ebay

IMHO far better and it also has the capability of running ordnance survey maps with GPS as well additionally loads of additional country maps "are available somewhere"

i've now got recent maps for all of uk with cameras and other POI's , all of europe all of USA and OS maps for all of uk .... and the pda can be used for other things as well

certainly wonr be going backwards to a decicated sat nav again

octygone - if you want a specific details pm me

This site seems to monitor up to date TomTom prices around some of the bigger stores.....

http://www.find-tomtom-deals.co.uk/

I suspect the offers are changing all the time, although at the moment no-one seems to be matching the pre-xmas

Good site tip Andy, cheers

Cheapest I could find about today was £250. Did have the carry case with it mind you, which is £50 from TomTom.

I'm still after the One for my Dad, so I'll keep a check on that site. I'm in the same boat - want to spend £200 or under ideally and I'm not particularly bothered about the case...

Just another thought - I run TomTom Mobile 5 on my Nokia mobile phone. The screen isn't large but it does the job.

I got the phone as my work one, so that didnt cost anything and then
