Hi guys and girls, my first post on the forum.

Currently looking for a 1.8tsi after some research and have a couple in my eye sight. One is being sold approved used 1.8tsi SE+ and the other is a 1.8tsi laurin and klement which is being sold private.

I had a look at the 1.8tsi this evening and it drove extremely well, gearbox felt lovely and smooth and it had plenty kick but was still very smooth and refined. Only thing thats bothered me is I lifted the bonnet half way through the test drive and kinda wish I had'nt lol. The engine seams noisey while idle. Ive uploaded a video to youtube but I am hoping someone with an ear for skoda's will hear it and say sounds good or sounds bad. A noisy engine with the bonnet up I could live with, noise from the area close to the timing chain tensioner would have me more worried...

Hard to say from the clip I'm afraid

 

You have to remember that the direct injection system is quite noisy with bonnet up , however you need to make sure it's not the cam chain

 

Try and determine where the noise is coming from (eg chain cover, fuel pump)

Hard to tell from the clip, but mine is not what I would call noisy.

 

It sounds clicky and I've heard that noise on other clips with noisy tensioners. I notice you were putting phone down the side of engine where timing chain is located.

 

I have a 60 reg L&K with 70k on it, but the timing chain tensioner was changed in 2014.

 

I would be wary of any noisy engine which has not had the tensioners changed.

Thanks for the comments guys. Think I will see if I can get a mechanic friend to come see the car with me. Its beautiful machine and drives well. Dont think I will get much more for my money in terms of milage, age and performance either plus with all the add-ons! Lovely car!

I just bought a 1.8TSI and when I first start it up it's a little noisy but then it goes quiet, I'm very happy with it.

Glad to hear that g_tee. Whats the age and milage of your one if you dont mind me asking?
