Flashing Lights!!!!

Featured Replies

I have a 98 Skoda Felicia 1.3i L and have had it about 6 months

Recently the headlights and all the dash lights have started flashing on cold nights, they don't go out just get bright then flash dim!

Anyone got any ideas????

I recently had to change the battery as the original was dead, and have replaced it with a 3rd PArty 50AH one as reccomended by the local motor factor, having said that the flashing was present before the old battery died

The alternator was changed by the previous owner about a year ago

Anyone any ideas???

That is most likely to be caused by a faulty regulater in the alternator.

could it be moisture on the wirein makin them short? check the wirein insulation.

Any advice how to test this, Haynes seems less than usefull, tells you how to pop it out but nowt else!!!

:) Easiest method is to run the engine, connect a volt meter to the battery and see if the voltage stays constant. It should be somewhere inbetween 13 and 14.2 volts. You need to run the engine at different speeds to check the consistency of the voltage. It may drop a bit at idle. As you have just had to replace the battery it may be that an alternator fault caused the old one to die, either by overcharging or undercharging.

locate volt reg

give it a smack......... not too hard

fixed -it :)

this has got curiouser and curiouser now, took the car in to an auto electrician, they said that it was regulating too high! so new Alternator etc fitted..

Now guess what the lights are flashing again, The voltage is between the levels mentioned above but is fluctuating.

I've been back to the Auto electrician who said it was fine and normal, but as I don't se other cars lights geting bright and dimming in time with the engine I'm a bit suspicious!

why not new voltage regulator??

me thinks your auto electrician should stick to washing machines?

My 120L would flash at full revvs on the mororway, disturbing to start, but you got used to it's throbbing kinda headlights. Never until you gave it some stick would it throb. Volt-reg dodgy, skoda garage pointed it out to me, gave it a smack, and told me to do this any time it played up again.

However on a felicia? cant really help never had the prob with one, still i say your electrician dont know that much

Hi Guys, I also have a Beautiful 2000 1.3L Felicia. It has A/C and Power Steering.

Today I noted that when revs go up Battery indicator lights. And goes brighter with higher revs.

Took a voltmeter and measured 14V at the battery with the engine off. 16~17V with the engine running. From what I've read it should be a damaged regulator. Also read that I should give it a SMACK! and that would do. I was hoping you could tell me how the regulator looks like, where to find it and whether is it too hard to change.

thanks a lot!

Damian.

If you remove the black plastic end cover on the alternator (probably need the alternator removed from car and on a bench), the voltage regulator/ brush unit should be then be removable by a couple of screws and a connector plug.

This can then be checked or renewed as necessary.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dude... It looks I'll be taking the car tomorrow to the garage to get the regulator changed.... Having the compresor and the alternator packed so tight together makes a little hard to do it by myself...

Does anyone knows or can estimate how much time can a battery survive overcharging? I've had the car for 6 months now but the baterry seems not older than a year.

Best Regards,

PS: I've just found about this forum... and let me tell you... It's absolutely great.

Thanks to all the people doing it!
