Question hutchy, have you done short journeys recently like yester morning when you said you used the car?

I have indeed, popped to the shops then round for a family dinner, then home, so that's 3 trips in the car less than a mile.

Howeverrrrr!! I don't think distance affects it MUCH, to cure it at least anyway, although may prolong it.

I know I can do a 30 mile trip which won't make a difference to the noise if I take my time, but I could do a 0.5 mile trip but heavy footed and the noise will be gone for a while again, possibly untill the next few short journeys.

So been for a drive this morning, done the journey nice and slow getting good mpg, on the way home I checked and the noise was still on so took it around the rev range once in third gear from 1,500 to about 4,000rpm at full throttle, the noise went instantly.

Yea spot on Hutchy! Exactly the same as mine.. glad you managed to get it recorded better than me! Lol.

Mines the same- take it for a good Italian tune up and she's fine..

So moving on from this I've stripped my top end down today.

Not a great deal to see but number one tappet had worn quite a lot, camshaft is worn in a few places but nothing heavy and the bearings have seen better days.

Also, is there any way to know for sure if any of the tappets had failed, as in not holding oil pressure properly causing the ticking noise time to time.
