Intermittant hesitation/missfire/judder 2009 2.0 170 TDCR

Featured Replies

Afternoon All,

I'm looking for pointers on what might be going wrong in my engine, and potentially if there is a DIY (I'm mechanically competent, but not garage tradesman) a fix for it.

Car:

2009 170 TDCR Executive Saloon/Hatch

Scenario:

Occurs on slight acceleration after either coasting down hill or very light throttle cruise on a motorway, such as following an lorry.

Fault:

Feels like a missfire on a petrol, sudden drop in power sounds and runs rough until it clears.

Cures with:

Either passes naturally quite quickly or I've dipped the clutch and revved the engine.

Other notes:

Nothing seen on my Bluetooth OBD dongle, nothing permanent on maxidot. Did once flash up 'Engine Service Fault' on maxidot before I had started the engine. The Turbo Actuator has been replaced before but a few miles have passed since then. Engine fault did show in the history on the last service but they wouldn't tell me what it was without me paying £45 for 'diagnostics' despite the computer must have already been in to see the history! :-o

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

What's your location as you could get out scanned by someone with VCDS.

Stalled at lights today and couldn't get it started. Had 35 miles left on the tank. By the time I had the RAC on the way and the wife on route to get a jerry can full of diesel (about half an hour) it started again. Managed to stop my wife before she bought the fuel. I knew it hadn't run dry but wanted to avoid the you've run out conversation! Brimmed it when running and it only took 53l. Definately not dry!

Booked in at a local independant VW centre for a checkup.

VAG scan and test drive showed uncovered no faults. Guess I'll just have to wait until it does it again!

My money would be on the EGR, a clean could resolve it or buy blanking kit and have it mapped out to remove any future issues.

That's what I've been thinking. Aren't they a bugger of a job to get to and often involve a cooler too? Are those engine clean services worth a shot?

There only a pain on the 4x4 models, fairly simple on the cr170, companies such as Darkside Developments offer kits INC mapping out the EGR software, certainly worth doing on a vehicle you plan on keeping.

I'll look into that then thanks. Just had a quick read about the engine flushes and I'll be giving that a wide birth!
