Tool to fix MP3 and WMA tags

Featured Replies

Got a lot of MP3s and WMAs that have been ripped in various ways over the years.

Some of them have odd names (like 20 variations of "Track 1") and most of them are missing the artist name etc

Is there any tool that will rewrite the tags and files names either automatically or manually?

I've tried Picard Music Music Brain but it's not really doing much.

You should be able to download the relevant tag info from such as Tag&Rename if they're all within albums.

There is a piece of free windows software called Mp3tag which can re-write the tags exactly as you want. You can download it here:

This is a German website but there is an English version available.

I've used both. I prefer Tag and Rename but I paid real ££s for it back in about 2002!

MP3Tag in English indeed.....

What I haven't used MP3Tag for is grouping tracks (Albums) to search for track listings on Freedb. I think I originally got MP3Tag to try out some of the volume normalisation stuff via REPLAYGAIN etc...

I tried to sort my collection out in the past, but it's unbelievably time consuming, trying to correct 30000 mp3s culled from all over the net. I used mp3tag, but gave up...life is too short.

Got it, does seem a lot easier to use than Picard

I can image I got ****ed off after a couple of hundred.

Also discovered Windows 10 won't play WMA files without work. You have to dig around for media player. the default Groove won't play MS's own file format.

WTF is going on at Redmond these days?

I had the same frustration a while back so wrote a tag editor :-)

I doubt it's as good as the ones mentioned above but you're welcome to try it if you want...

If it's simple I'd be happy to have a pop with it.

It's very simple (I can't do complicated!  :D)

PM me your email address and I'll send it over tonight...

D'oh - brain drain....

I can't recall now, why I had to get MP3TAG. It might have been something to do with V1/V2 tag mismatches. What I used to generate REPLAYGAIN tags is FOOBAR2000.
