Rear camber shims

Featured Replies

On the subject of 4 wheel alignment, is there/can you buy a pair of rear +ve camber shims for the Mk2 vRS?

This was a doddle to rectify on my previous rear twist beam car - simply remove the stub axle and bolt in the shim.

Yes, I'm aware it's not a fixed beam setup, but after having my alignment done, I've been told the minimum camber my particular vehicle can be set to is about -1.5 degrees - far too much for my liking.

It was initially a whopping -2.5 degrees, hence a nicely ruined pair of rear tyres!

In my opinion, a pair of +0.25 to +0.50 degree shims would bring the rear to more sensible day-to-day settings, but I don't see any sold in the usual places, and nothing from the Mk5 Golf stable, either.

Any suggestions?

If you were on -2.5 and they can only get it to -1.5 there is something wrong.  Either a worn bush(es) in the arm or a bent arm.

I agree though, even though -1.5 is within spec for a vRS, you are better off around the -1.0 area.

I quite often set them to -1.0 when stepping tyres so it should be within scope.

The arms and camber bolts are brand new, as the old ones were seized.

I don't quite understand the term "stepping tyres"? What do you mean?

The inside edge of the tyres used to step or feather. The best fix was normally to reduce the camber from -1.5 to -1.0.

There's something wrong if the best they could get was -1.5.

Stepping tyres = sawtoothing

I'm not sure if you can even get -2.5, sounds like it wasn't set up/adjusted correctly.

Hmm, I'll get the geo checked elsewhere, then.

I don't want to lunch another pair of premium tyres.

Cheers.
