Tyre valves

Featured Replies

Popped down to a local garage today to get my new tyre swapped with my punctured one and the guy said that the valve that was on the spare was rubbish and lets air out when you hit kerbs.

The valve that was on there was the kind where you dont need to take it off in order to fill it up with air. I was thinking thats very kind of him as I drove off but then it suddenly struck me that he might just be lying and taking my good one then replacing it with a standard one!

So, question is was he right in saying that the standard valves are better? Not that I'm going to lose any sleep over it anyway mind, just curious :D

It's the actual valve cap that screws on to the valve that's the problem. They are sometimes known as valve extensions. In my experience they're rubbish and should be replaced with normal valve caps ASAP. You may then find that the valve stem is too short to get an inflator on to it easily, especially if you have wheel trims. The real answer is to replace the valve with a longer one but that needs the tyre removing and costs money! (about
