Warning - Potential petrol/diesel shortages in France

I nearly came unstuck in France this week. I filled up with Petrol at my usual Cite de Europe petrol station after getting off the Chunnel but was told off for putting too much petrol in my car (fortunately I couldn't read the sign  ) . Apparently there are fuel shortages due to strike action. However I didn't have any problems further south.

If going to France I'd recommend filling up before leaving old Blighty though

I've found this since -http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-france-politics-protests-oil-idUKKCN0YC0LE  [Edited link as it didn't work]

thanks for that you saved a mate of mine a problem--latest I have is the pumps were/are restricted to 20Eu   if they have any----a big thankyou   to the BEEB for being on the ball approx 2+ days late ---rubbish

on the plus side, if they start rioting, no one will have to worry about petrol bombs.......i'll get my coat.....

Yup, I was only supposed to put E20 in mine - I got told off when I hit more than double that. Well the sign was written in French  :notme:

Since then in Dordogneshire I've not had a problem. I'm driving north on Saturday and sadly don't have the range of my old Superb I 1.9pd (more economical and bigger tank) so will probably have to top up on the way, fingers crossed  . I'll take it steadier going back but my normal economy of about 46mpg has dropped to 38mpg when fully laden with big people/stuff and cruising at 130kph.

I'm not sure if it's perception but the tsi does seem more sensitive to load and hills. Can't blame the speed too much as I did a tour of Europe last September/October (just two in car) and averaged high 40's including a tank full through Austria at 53mpg.

My old Superb 1.9pd somehow always did about 50mpg - whatever the circumstances

On the up side (for me) I've heard it's diesel supplies that are the main problem so having a petrol may help

can you pull the(diesel) tank vent trick and squeeze in a bit more in ?

No,

I did this on my European trip when I was being a bit "Yorkshire" whilst filling up with cheap petrol in Luxembourg and ended up with an engine management light on (engine ran OK though). Whilst in the black forest Tomtom found me a Skoda dealer so I popped in. Apparently there are sensors (something to do with the charcoal canister) - The master mechanic couldn't speak English and my German isn't great, but basically was told "von klick - HALT"

It's not you, they are very sensitive to how much boost you use.

When I drive over to my parents it's mainly town centre and ring roads with many traffic lights. Our Passat 2.0 Tdi is always 40-45mpg. The Octavia TSi can be 55mpg with just me in the car, driving for economy and being lucky with the traffic lights. Fully loaded, driving to get there ASAP and being a bit unclucky with the lights can be 35mpg.

Hi,

Safely got back home driving back from the Dordogne via an overnight stop in Honfleur (via N154 not Paris) . I topped up a few times on the way back just to be sure but saw no further evidence of fuel supply problems

Drove through some amazing thunderstorms though -  Spectacular lightning  and roads turned into rivers
