1.2 T.SI.Timing chain problem and tuning box.

Featured Replies

Hi, as it is well known some early 1.2 T.S.I  105s had faulty timing chains, it got me thinking, if one of the cars built at the time of these faulty chains but is showing no signs of trouble had a tuning box e.g Bluespark , T.M.C fitted would this put more stress on the chain and lead to premature trouble. Thanks.

Purely a mechanical link/drive - which is reciprocal regardless of the state of tune. There will be no additional resistive effect applied to the chain.

If there are any changes to the camshaft lift, and/or valve springs - that would be a different matter.

Under max power, exhaust pressures will be higher and the exhaust cam may have to work a bit harder.

Main problem area are the dynamics. I.e. accelerations in the lower gears, abrupt speed changes during gear changes etc is where the chain will be most stressed.

But since it is going to be less than 140 Raging Horses maybe just get the later chain and tensioner fitted if needed and then give it that huge power boost.
