Window rain repellent recommendations

Featured Replies

I have been using turtle wax rain repellent for the last couple of years. It's far better imo than RainX and longer lasting.

However it has been discontinued and am nearly out of my last bottle :(

What do people recommend as a suitable replacement?

Yes   And thanks to Ebay fees, especially them taking 10% off postage AS WELL, that's about as low as I can go on there.  However if I have no fees to pay, I can go cheaper.   And postage is the same

I use rainx and never had a problem, just put on numerous coats, but always hate any of them on front screen, sides are brilliant and boot, but ended up getting windscreen replaced on last car it annoyed me so much, that goes for every repellent ive used

If you can be bothered to go the whole hog Gtechniq G1. 30 months and mine was still going. Just renewed and forgot how good it really is.

If you cant go/dont't want to go the whole hog then try G5 which is an easier on/off product which should give 3-5 months.

Gtechniq G5 is a popular product. As Steve says the whole hog version is G1 clear vision.

Cheaper options is Angel Wax H2GO at just over £6 a bottle I think now. I've used it for a good few years and seen 6 months with it.

I've never used anything else, but I have used Power Maxed Rain Off Glass Sealant which I have found to be very good.

The original is Aquapel, very easy to apply and relatively cheap if you can get it. I used to buy direct from USA!

Now moved on to GTechniq - mainly G5 as I top up every few washes. Not only a rain repellent but makes cleaning a bug splattered screen in the summer easier.

I'm using Auto Direct Ghost Rider and it works a treat, very easy to apply and seems to last a while. It works for me plus it didn't cost a lot and I still seem to have quite a bit left.

+1 for Gtechniq G5..... it twice a year on the .:R36.

Works a treat and a doddle to use!

I found a Duxback http://www.duxback.co.uk/ kit in the shed the other night, forgot I had it :) may apply it to the vRS - unsure yet.

Aquapel for me :)  Last so bloody long too!  Goes on all my motors.

+1 - 2yrs since application on the Yeti and it's still working....

Aquapel is damn easy to apply I must admit.

Happy to support a fellow Brisky member; will have to order some Aquapel then :D

I found rain-x just came off too quickly and the remaining left would be a nightmare to either top up or clean off proper.

I tried multiple layers and didn't really help.

RainX is rubbish in comparison, put bluntly :)

It's better than nothing though ... I'm not s fan of the concentrate bottle but the glass cleaner with it built in is quite good and easy to use and you're topping it up every time you wash and clean the car.

I starterd off with Rain-x which worked for varying amounts of time and I often found it would streek badly when you wipe, so I swapped to G5 and that stuff is great, unfortunately a gust of qind blew the bottle off the roof of my old Fabia (I know, it shouldn't have been there...) and emptied the last half of a bottle on the floor, then I got the Monte and since then I've not had any and I miss it, I was going to go with G5 again but looking in Fast car mag the other day there was a review on a product from Japan that I thought I'd give a try and see how it goes. I recieved it yesterday but haven't had a dry screen to try it on. I'm going to do a practice run on the Octavia first and then do the Monte and I'll report back either here or in a new thread.

We can see. ;)  I don't normally do group buys, but I sell the aquapel as part of my detailing so its no longer a nil profit deal like the spirit of a group buy.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well after not having a dry day to apply my new stuff I've got it applied and for the last week or so not had a wet day to test it properly. :( All I can say is it seams to do quite well on the industry standard chuck a jug full of water on it test.

Well it started to rain not long after I posted that last post so I went out for a short drive. It starts to chuck the rain off at around 40 mph, and when you use the wipers it doesn't smear like Rain-x so overall I'd say it's alright. Maybe not the best, and I maybe haven't applied it quite as it should have been, I may not have left it to "dry" long enough. But it never got bad enough that I had to use the wipers while I was out, I only used them to test.

Application is easy, rain repellency is alright, it doesn't smear and if the specs are correct it should last for a long time.
