Undertray come loose

Featured Replies

Hi, for a few weeks I could hear a small rattle start and it sounded like it was coming from behind the dashboard. Over the few weeks it got louder and louder and sound like the heating box or something had worked loose and it would vibrate loudly at all engine speeds over 30mph.

I booked it into the main dealer for next week and they said it would be covered under the warranty. At least that made me a bit happier.

Anyway, last Sunday we we out on a drive when the noise got really loud when we opened the passenger window (as it was a hot day) and this intregied me as it meant the vibration was outside and not behind the dash when there was a thud and the sound of some things hitting the car underneath. We imediatly stopped and the wife thought we had hit some debris in the road but I could not see anything. I walked down the room and found one bolt.

I got back to the car and moved it a bit onto the verge so I could look underneath easier and I saw that the undertray was loose. I looked closer and found that all 3 bolts at the rear of the tray had come out. So that was causing all the noise etc.

I manage to put that one found bolt back into the centre hole and did it finger tight and then we made out way home.

I went to the main dealer Monday and brought a couple of new bolts for a £1 each, then using a Torx socket driver I fitted the bolts all back in and tight, then cancelled the visit to the main dealer. I also checked all the other smaller undertray screw and they were fine.

I have no idea how 3 bolts could come undone all aty the same time and the undertray has never been off before.

So if anyone read this and they have a vibration that sounds like the dashboard it might be wise to check the undertray.

Probably never done up correctly in the first place!
