Annual merry go 'round. Insurance renewal

Featured Replies

i HATE this ringing around EVERY year, trying to get a better overall deal.

Why does it have to be this way, or is it that the insurance dealers/brokers want to make it as painful and time wasting as possible, in the hope we'll simply accept the renewal price, turn over and have our tummies financially tickled again.

Someone needs to devise a better system, and when they do, they'll get my business.

Total and utter minefield

Agggg!

Find a broker that you can trust.  As an IAM member I use their insurance broker and just try a couple of others as a comparison.  IAM broker been the cheapest for me for the past 5 years.  However, I don't just look at the price; I also look at the terms and what is covered at what level.  For instance some policies now charge even if the windscreen is repaired rather than needing to be changed - mine doesn't.

Been IAM member since 1984. Refused to quote every year for the eight years from 2005 when I ran a Saab 9-5 chipped from 185 to 220 horses.

Why not try them now?  One of 'my' group's members runs a chipped Audi A3 (170 to 205-210) and is insured via the IAM's broker.

Been with LV for past five years and they're as low as anyone else I've looked at. Plus their staff are based in UK.

On principle I won't give any company another chance when I get a car they do approve of.

Customer service is paramount for me. That's why I'll never go back to Cafe Rouge, whichever branch I'm passing.

Rang LV my current insurer this morning.

Magically dropped their letter quote by £35.

Knott still beat them by a further £15 however.

I shall ring a few others tomorrow onwards.

Just done mine.

Renewal was the cheapest quote I could get by about £20.

I'm with Chaucer, now Geoffrey Ins, part of their pitch is cheaper quotes for existing customers.

You're on my list of many, so don't fret.

We're with Aviva and play the game every year. This year was different though.

Got renewal through for £612 for both cars, did quote online came in as £560 odd (same as last year). Rang them to do the whole price match thing. Guy on phone says 'want the bad news or the gold first? We can't price match...we can beat it!' it came in at £540 this year by ringing up.

If only they'd just do the best price instead of this expensive messing around. It must cost them money to send out quotes etc. Guess they prey on those who'll just let it roll over

My insurance this year went up by £23, I was with Aviva last year and stayed this year with £342 with Protected NCB, Legal Cover, Courtesy Car & Foreign Use.

I could have gone with Hastings Premier at £264, but I wanted Protected NCB, Legal Cover, Courtesy Car & Foreign Use on it and that racked it up to £289 IIRC, then there's the credit card charge of 1.5%.

So I could have saved £45 in total, I could have taken it back down to ~£229, with a cashback site and you may wonder why I chose to stay with Aviva when it cost me over £100 more, the reason being is that Hastings have lots & lots of hidden charges and I've dealt with them before when I rode a bike and they screwed that claim up completely and I lost my bike for 3½ months because they fudged the repairs to it.

They also sent me a cheque for the wrong amount 3 times, so I kept the last one for their troubles, they gave up trying to pursue it when I said that I was cancelling the policy and going to the ombudsman.

So I've learnt that the cheapest isn't always the best and I am quite willing to pay a little more to ensure that I get a reputable insurance company and not get mucked around when things go wrong.
