Advice required: 2010 Fabia vRS @ 82K miles - engine failure

I have a 2010 Fabia vRS with 82000 miles on the clock.

It has died with great success - there is no compression in the 3rd cylinder.

 

Took to my local Skoda dealer (franchise type). They poked a camera around as much of the engine as they could without stripping it down. There is a foreign object in 3rd cylinder that appears to have welded itself to the cylinder wall (about halfway down, not resting against anything like piston which is why I fear the welded option).

 

Dealer needs to strip engine down to head to investigate further. If foreign part is welded to cylinder wall, or has damaged the wall I'm being told new engine sits at £5K to £6K to be fitted. Strip cost is £500. If I’m lucky and parts can be replaced with current engine my guess would be still a £2K or so bill from the dealer.

 

The car is slightly bruised from age (4 x mildly kerbed diamond cut alloys, a few chips on bonnet and a dent in the boot). From what I can tell of ebay etc. I’d possibly get £3K for the car if fixed and running – not worth the cost of a new engine. I think a profit could be made for someone that could cover the labour themselves but this isn’t something I can do.

 

Due to age and mileage, dealer has stated Skoda will provide no good will aid. My dealer didn’t really seem bothered and was happy to part ways without offering much in the way of help. I’ve since limped the vRS home and have it sitting in a parking bay.

 

Has anyone had this bad a problem out of warranty? I’m unsure of the best way to get the most money for the car as it sits. I tried an online scrap company and for scrap quoted just £35 and for a private company to fix and send on a potential £775. I was hoping more £1K to £1.5K. I checked ebay but can’t see any vRS petrols sold with running problems. I’m not technically / mechanically minded enough to sell for parts myself.

 

I'd appreciate any advice anyone has to give.

Welcome to the forum, and sorry to hear this, but it is not uncommon.

How long have you had the car & what do you know about it, servicing history, warranty history etc?

 

First thing & important is stop the dealership from stripping down the engine if you have to pay.

The result is well known.

You are not going to waste money rebuilding a 82,000 mile CAVE Twincharger.

The foreign object is the tip off the Spark Plug or part of the piston ring, or even a valve burnt out,

 and since they removed the spark plug to put the camera in they know what the spark plug is like.

You might sell the car for spare or repairs in the likes of Briskoda or other forums for much more than you are being offered.

There are members that have bought '2nd Hand Engines' and had these fitted,

or New, and the cost for a replacement engine fitted is not as much as Skoda Dealers' Invoice Skoda UK 

for Warranty work.

So depressing to read about yet another major failure and the attitude of dealers.

My dealer told me that goodwill is sliding scale based on service history/dealer loyalty and age and mileage. They gave me the impression it goes out to 6 years. In the case of this well known issue that every dealer and skoda has seen many times, I think the dealer should at least try.

Contact Skoda uk and complain.

Bypass the dealer and contact Skoda UK without delay.

 

This is a known and well documented issue and Skoda UK know it.

 

Whilst the car is out of warranty there should still be some considerable goodwill left on the table.

 

As the dealer has already inspected the engine then Skoda UK can speak with them for more information without having to return the car back to the dealer for further investigative work.

 

It's a 2 minute call that might just save you thousands of pounds, I'd say it is worth a shot...
