fuel gauge issue

I've searched a few topics but they all seam to be about the fuel gauge being stuck.

 

My problem is slightly different. I can be driving along with half a tank if fuel and then randomly the gauge drops to near zero with the maxi dot pinging for please refuel and displaying around 15 miles of fuel left.

 

it will stay like that for a bit and then slowly work it's way back up to the half a tank.

 

 

Any idea what's wrong? is it easily fixed and about how much?
