Conflicting information regarding fitting aftermarket cd/sat nav system

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have an Octavia 2006 Elegance 1.9TDI with a factory fitted MFD2 sat nav/cd/radio system which works on (outdated) maps but off cd which takes forever to load up.

I was looking into buying a 3rd party system with Bluetooth, USB, SD, WiFi and all the rest of the trimmings and have found some nice ones which apparently will fit my car.

After having spoken to a company in Liverpool who specialize in this area, I have been told that none will work with my car because it has already a Sat Nav installed. Apparently if I had a cd/radio that wouldn't be a problem to replace but because its a satnav it won't work due to can-bus problems, mismatching of wires, and other issues......wow first I have heard of this!

First off, my steering wheel does not have any controls, but the sat-nav does come up on my dash. I do not have (or need) a rear camera but do have sensors which bleep.

The guy said that I will lose most functions and it won't work properly, even coming on and off with the car will be hit & miss. It may even drain my battery.....

I have just spoken to a fitter who basically said the same thing but if I am willing to pay, he will have a try....hmm

This has totally confused me, after all, there is a sat nav fitted, surely a simple replacement using the same plugs should work????

So the myriads of aftermarket dvd/radio/satnavs out there are only designed to work with cars which only have a cd/radio and wish to upgrade and NOT for replacing older satnavs....why is this not mentioned on any single advert????

I am lost for words, so please if anyone out there has some experience in this field and can tell me exactly what's going on and what to do , I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

I am uploading a photo of my dash incase it helps.

He's talking bull basically. It has nothing to do with it being a CD/Radio or sat-nav but all to di with what stereo you want to fit.

The ones that are designed for VW/Skoda etc cars that are advertised as such should work but obviously dependent on the individual unit compatibility.

What he was probably referring to is a standard aftermarket stereo with no CAN bus support where it wouldn't turn on/off properly but this can be fixed by just taking a switched live from the fuse box.

Guess it depends on your budget but I personally went with an OEM Columbus sat-nav.

Thanks Phil, appreciate your comments.

I just spoke to another fitter who said NO aftermarket unit will function properly,  I will lose my sat nav which shows up on my dash and anything else which rely on coded messages to and from the system for information. He said VW code all their stuff and because of this they cannot communicate.

What a bummer.......

There is NOTHING we can fit or do to overcome this he said........I'm about to cry!!!!

Again... he's also talking bull.

There are certain aftermarket systems that communicate over the CAN bus system.

Kenwood do one that looks quite similar to the factory fitted system but works with parking sensors, climate and maxidot.

There are also Chinese units on ebay that work with CAN too.

But again it's down to the compatibility of the individual stereo model you are looking at. Some may only be compatible with certain years (before of after 2009 FL is the usual changeover point).
