Superb Hybrid in 2019

Featured Replies

My initial reaction to this is 'urgh', but on reflection it could be very nice if they do it properly. Something akin to the new Honda NSX hybrid springs to mind. It would have been much nicer if they'd made it the 2.0 TSI with four electric motors for effective AWD and extra shove from a standing start, though. Add in the kinetic energy conservation and the ability to top up the batteries for local journeys, and it'd be a winner. Unfortunately I think it'll end up being more like the LOL-Mitsubishi-Outlander though, from a performance standpoint, especially being a Skoda (rather than Audi). The quoted MPG is always laughable for hybrids, but after DieselGate they're going to push it hard. So long as they keep the bigger engines coming I don't mind too much.

What are your thoughts?

I read that when the article came out and is probably my next car once it has been out for at least six months. Though I am hoping for a diesel power plant like MB do. We will see what the price is in L & K trim!

I think the Passat GTE is c£40k as a guide.

I like the idea of it, personally. I agree that I doubt we'll see anything too revolutionary for the first model, but a 1.4 TSI with two electric motors seems likely (they used that for the Vision S...) and that could give both an economical drive and also a decent power output. Actually, I think it might even be two options: one front wheel with one motor and then an AWD with front and back.

Price is going to be interesting, because hybrids are darn pricey still and that might make things difficult for Skoda if they don't get the pricing right. Very much wrongly IMO, they're still seen as a budget brand by the mass market and while the new Superb is likely making in-roads if it's too expensive most people are likely to not even consider it. If they make the 2019 figure, I'm already thinking that it could be my next car (is it wrong to think about the next car before the S3 has even arrived :) ?)

I think it will be very interesting to see what happens with the engines long run, not just Skoda but in general. Tesla have shown you can make a damn-powerful and fast all electric cars with a decent range. If more manufacturers start developing these it will push the prices right down. Still some work to do with ranges perhaps, but at about 200-250 miles shown as a possibility, that's will do for the majority of journeys, on UK roads at least. I guess Skoda are certainly some way off this though :D

I strongly doubt that this will be anything other than the same powertrain as in the Passat GTE. Although with some improvements in the next 3 years! It'll probably be an upgraded version for the facelift of the Passat and Superb.
