Am I right, that air flows from passenger side toward the centre console?

Because of the stink from the aircon, I pulled the filter out and gave it a good shakedown to get rid of the dust and crud and to spray some dettol spray inside.

Unfortunately, I couldn't remember which way round the air flows, I put the filter back dirty side facing the passenger side.

There is no arrow mark on the vag filter element and in any case it can be inserted either way round.

Here's a picture of the heater/AC stuff from an angle you don't usually get to see. As if you were looking through the firewall from the front of the car. this is a 9N Polo one, but I think Fabia Mk1 is identical, and Fabia mk2 may well be very similar.

Cabin fan location is directly behind the outside/fresh air flap and recirculated air flaps, not visible from this angle.

Depends on which filter it is. If there is a seperatly plastic frame the filter will have a directional arrow on it that goes left to right. If it's a later filter without the plastic frame and no markings it can go either way. The filter changed to the 6R0 filter without the frame sometime in 2011 I think. But the heater box is the same and filters are interchangeable
