speed cameras m1 Wakefield/Leeds area

Featured Replies

Anyone know anything about these

I don't normally venture that far north but I've come out of Leeds Bradford airport this morning and joined the m1 southbound somewhere near Leeds around 4am

On a long stretch a camera flashed on the other side of the road twice

There wasn't really much on the other side, can they read and flash you oncoming?

The first thing I did was check the speedo and it said 78mph,I never broke 80 the whole journey

The speed camaras on that part of the M1 only work if a speed is displayed above each lane and there are stripes on the road. They get you from behind.

If the lane speed is say 50 and you go faster you trigger the camera. no speed displayed the camara is not activated

Flashing Cameras on a Motorway?

Yorkshire loves speed cameras. :)

I know that i travel the route plenty, but i am questioning 'Flashing Cameras' on a Motorway.

Yep, they are mounted on the gantry, rear facing, one for each lane...

Do they actually flash, and if all lanes have speeders would they all be flashing?

Yes they flash, I've regularly seen then flash from the opposite side of the carriageway, but on the M62 not the M1 as per the OP's query.

I've only ever seen one flash at a time, but as there is one camera with it's own flash for each lane I'd guess it is possible that if you have three or four cars abreast, all speeding, then you could get four separate flashes at once...

I'm not 100% but the one that flashed wasn't on a gantry

Thought at the time it was on a pole, and it definitely flashed twice

Should be OK tho if its other side of road

Yep, here they are...

And here is the flash (on the right)...

Police Scotland admitted to holding 850 Million plus digital images from ANPR cameras since 2009.

They said in 2008 that these images would be deleted after 2 years, and they only need held for investigations for 9 months.

Good to know that someone is looking out for our and others safety and when you cross the border heading north your vehicles trip can be

monitored much easier than in England.

If the lane speed is say 50 and you go faster you trigger the camera. no speed displayed the camara is not activated

Avon & Somerset police state the speed cameras on the M5 are also active at 70mph when the NSL or the gantry signs are not illuminated, I can see this becoming common place throughout the UK - if it isn't already.

Hadecs are starting to appear besides the gantries even when the older cameras are still above all lanes.

To be honest I can't really see why the police just don't let us get on with it on the Motorways. The roads are so crowded that constant speeding is a no no, too much traffic.

30 and 20 Zones, yes Keep the speed down as there for a reason, on the motorway, no we are all going in the same direction.

Spend more time catching people on the phone/texting/eating a sarnie etc, etc,

The biggest gripe I have is the middle lane hoggers who clog  up the motorways, a 3 lane motorway becomes only 2 lanes.

End of grip

You are right the camera's on the gantrys do flash even when the signs are not lit up with a speed limit,

It seems to be the gantry as you drive up the hill from junction 41 towards 40, the one around the mile to 40 exit sign,

Must have seen it flash about 5 times since it was installed and i don't use that stretch of road that often,

No idea if people are getting tickets for it but if they are I think it stinks,

I remember coming home from manchester one night a few months back and was heading up to get off at junction 40 and passed said gantry just before a car in middle lane going alot faster than me did and when it flashed him, it scared crap out of me, wondered what the hell it was on a pitch black motorway,

Not at all dangerous

^^^^^

I'm thinking that's where I was

  • 1 year later...

Last night around 3am  I was driving on the southbound M1 as I was coming of the motorway at junction 34 Tinsley viaduct the camera flashed me and there was no sign lit to say any restrictions on the speed up the 70 mile . It's usually it tells you about any speed reduction in advance on the variable speed section.

I forgot to write what time when I got flashed
