exhaust manifold replacement.

Featured Replies

Hey all, my car is going to the garage today, because of an exhaust leak, hopefully the downpipe will simply be coming off the turbo, but if the exhaust manifold is cracked, what would you recommend for a replacement/upgrade?

cheers all

I replaced mine with a standard second hand one from a mk4 golf.

Could be the turbo to manifold bolts have come undone.

its currently there being investigated..... have previously had the bolts from downpipe (stainless de-cat) to turbo come loose, but its making a different sound this time....

lets hope its something simple, but investigating manifolds anyway... may just go for a straight manifold plus standard turbo while I'm at it.... thinking the OE turbo has done 162k now.... I would upgrade, but skint.... can't affor £700 for a hybrid turbo, or the 2nd hand k04 upgrade..... I can still go 250bhp on standard .....

the turbo/downpipe seal.... got some new bolts on too , just for good measure!

I love it when its an easy fix!!

Hi, glad it's not a bank breaker.

Just curious, how was she running before the fix? How was the performance and fuel economy?

cheers.

it was running fine, but making a "tappety" noise on full boost, , which  I assumed couldn't be tappets! (and it got progressively worse)  lol.... always worries me if there is a "new" noise though.....

performance was spot on..... no change.... just sounded rough... (and you could hear and smell the leak under the bonnet) only time I have recognized that noise before was a cracked manifold, hence my worries!

cold start is a bit lumpy for about 2 seconds...... BUT I have just serviced and put in NGK 7's which are a colder plug, so expected a bit of a rougher cold start..... but holding better at higher temps with higher power...

seems my 162,000 mile old turbo running 1.6 bar peak boost will last a bit longer :)

wow... the car seems SO much better.... no funny noises, engine is smooth and quiet , exhaust sounds better... I think it must have always been ****ed.... maybe a new gasket wasn't used when the exhaust was put on ?!
