Wheel Bearing

Featured Replies

Hi all. After a service was told Octavia will need a passenger side reverse wheel bearing. Local mechanic had a look a few days later. He says there's a small amount of noise coming from it and he wouldn't be unduly worried about replacing it in a hurry until if and when it gets significantly worse. He also says this as he says no play apparent from steering wheel. Car over 10 years old, so not sure if it would be worth replacing anyway. Be very grateful if anyone could shed any light from similar experience

It probably will get worse over time but his advice is not wide of the mark..I drove my Alfa for months with some noise at speed before it was proven to be a wheel bearing.

Did they say why it may have needed a wheel bearing? It could be when they did a fault code check there was an ABS fault logged.

Thanks for the replies Nick and Tech, much appreciated. They said there were a couple of noises, and maybe also something coming from direction of flywheel... As I said, driving well, and an independent guy took it for a drive, threw the eye over it and wasn't unduly concerned. So long as nothing falls off in interim I suppose!

If its the same design as the Mk5 Golf (which i think the octavia is based on) its an absolute piece of cake to replace the bearing and its better to do it before it rubs off the edge of the ABS sensor or that will be another £70 you will have to fork out.

Wheel off, caliper off, disc will likely come off without the carrier undoing depending on what size discs are on it, remove largish triple square/spline setscrew with a breaker bar, remove bearing/hub assembly, put the new one on and build back up again. (not sure if I took the ABS sensor out just in case I damaged it)

if I buy old car with 160k km on ODO...first thing is all bearing replaced. Nothing saves more money than new bearing.

Unless you drive 30km month...then don't bother. Once grease get stuck and you're sliding...don't worry

If you're doing a rear bearing change the stone guard at the same time. Bit like water pumps and cam-belt services, the guard is a hub off job and they rot at the bolts and come loose.
