Colleague has one and its a good match for an XKR 400. Very quick capable car. Dont knock it.

How can you slag a mighty jag off?????

Cant see what there is to dislike about them. Excellent cars and on the shortlist to replace my V6 Omega. However, the missus has an eye on a TVR instead. Then there will be used Monaros about as well. Keep saving until omething nice comes along. 4.5L Cerbera if we go TVR I think.

So if you are buying a 1997 model XJR, I guess you mean the V8? If so, two main things to check:

The engines in the XJR up to 1999 had Nikasil bores and were prone to damage by running high sulphur petrol. If he has one from 1997 then potentially the engine will have starting problems and may run rough if the bores have gone. Jaguar dealers can do a blow by test to check this out. I think they (Jaguar) were replacing engines FOC up to 100,000 miles or 5 years. If the engine code last 6 characters begin with an F you are OK as these have steel liners instead, but this did not come in until early 2000 if I understand correctly.

Front end bushes are another area that suffers. The steering can be very vague and the car can follow "lorry tracks" in the tarmac. A new set of bushes sorts it out.

Other stuff to check is full functionality of the heating / aircon and all the electrics. A major nightmare to fix if it is not well.

They are a lovely car. Quick enough to see off most stuff when you are in a hurry, with absolutely brutal midrange. Quiet and svelte when you want to waft across a country or three in a day.

They are an awesome car, will see off any Skoda in supreme comfort and luxury, bloody cheap now aswell considering how much they cost new!!

That's only true of the V8. A 1997 XJR will have a supercharged 4.0 straight six, and no nikasil problems.

Loved this car and was a contender when I was chopping in the Fabia. Shame about the running costs

You have to wear a sheepskin coat and a Trilby.

Actually, that pic looks great.I'd have to change my house to go with the car though

Did not research the 6 cylinder ones as the differences in the way they drive mean you would be mad to go for the 6 when the 8 is close in price. The 8 cylinder models are the problem ones, but I know there are also Jag 6 cylinder nikasil lumps out there, but dont know what they are running in.

The V8 XJR came along a bit later: the 6-cylinder variant is a fair bit cheaper. I'm also fairly sure the nikasil problem only affects V8s, so the XJR, from pre 2000 models, is the pick of the bunch (and it also suffers fewer suspension problems).

Whilst the later supercharged v8 has up to 400 bhp (4.2 variant), the original XJR 6-cylinder model still produces 322 bhp, so it's no slouch. And you can buy a 6-cyl XJR for under 7k, whereas a later v8 XJR will be around 10k, so it really is a tempting bargain.
