Creak

I own a Yeti (2016) 1.2 tsi SE L dsg, an I have noticed a strange creak when you place the car in reverse an reverse around one metre you get a low down front end metallic sounding creak?

Anyone any idea?

Does it happen every time or just if you leave it for a day or two.

Diagnosing squeaks and rattles is a mechanics nightmare, so look at it logically.

 

If you reverse and get the noise, what happens if after the noise, you stop and then reverse some more without going forward, does it make the noise again ?

 

If it does make the noise again its probably the drive train making the noise, eg. drive shaft, CV joint, brake rotor, I'm not saying they are faulty, just where you should look first.

 

If it doesn't make the noise its probably the front suspension unloading as the front lifts, this only occurs by moving backwards, slowing down or braking will load it again, so you should look at the anti roll bar mountings, or suspension strut gaiters.

 

All these things can be affected by dry conditions, so one way is to spray these with water and try reversing again to see if it stopped the noise.

Is it when you apply the brakes.......sometimes they can make a groaning noise when lightly applied I've found, particularly when wet.

So just checked this again, so when I first reverse there is a creak , if I stop in reverse then reverse again no creak. So possibly its a front spring?

It sounds like it, could give it a squirt of WD40, you can see the strut gaiters and springs through the wheel arch, the anti roll bar rubbers are under the steering rack gaiters and are visible from behind the front wheels, but keep the WD40 away from the brake rotors.
