EGR Cooler Failure

During the last service it was noted there was a possible EGR valve leak on my 2010,2.0PD TDi Scout, exhaust fumes were entering the cabin; slight at first, but becoming stronger.  Took it in and they have stated the EGR Cooler is faulty.

 

What effects would this have on the vehicle; lumpy ride, poor fuel economy??

 

The first thing I noted when I got the car back after it had been replaced was how quiet it was.  Yes the usual diesel clatter was there, but previously (and for as long as I can remember, and I've owned the vehicle since new) there was a slight 'whoosh/whine' when pressing down on the accelerator, though it was never noticed when at a steady speed, or braking.  That sound has now gone, and the engine feels a lot tighter and responsive. 

 

I know there can never be a direct like for like comparison for fuel economy as there are too many variables to take into consideration, but I have always been slightly disappointed with my fuel economy when comparing it to other Scout PD owners.  According to the 70k+ miles covered on Fuelly, I am getting 37-42mpg around town, and 44-48mpg on the motorway, with a best of 51.9mpg on one trip.

If the egr has been faulty possibly from new (possible) and leaking the gas the engine expects to recirculate, then it would be adding extra fuel to build the compression correctly would it not, depending on where the leak was (relative to sensors and such) I know many people do an egr delete, but that needs to be mapped out iirc

I had never owned either a diesel or an all wheel drive vehicle before buying the Scout. Just before the warranty ran out, I pointed out that I was not happy with a metallic rattling sound and vibration when I depressed the clutch. Within seconds the Master Tech had diagnosed a failed DMF.

Thing was that sound/sensation had been present since new and the car had been through 5 services at Škoda dealerships and none of them noticed it.

Noone Noticed it, or just ignored it to avoid the expense of fixing it..

I hope they didn't ignore your pollen filter and Haldex oil change too

I get the haldex done every 37k, and the pollen filter annually.

2010, so a facelift, with a PD engine. Are you sure?

 

I thought all facelift Scout's from 2009 got the CR engine.

One of the Last Octy Scouts with a PD engine, built June 2010. Was only informed after placing the order that if I had waited my just a few weeks it would have came with the CR.

Skoda dealers still record it as Model:Octavia Scout 2.0CR Elegance!

I still get a buzz when I put my foot down and feel all that torque kicking in, however, the downside is the PD was never designed to have DPF and the associated equipment fitted. I've just had the EGR Cooler replaced.

I've never heard of a PD owner complaining about NOT having a DPF .

The EGR blank looks tempting, but I think I'm going to have to wait till ex warranty.
