unbalanced wheels or......?

Featured Replies

I've noticed on our FL mk2 DSG 170 that when "making progress" that the steering wheel judders just like the front wheels are out of balance however...... it only does this when power is applied whether accelerating or maintaining a given speed. The juddering appears to stop if I coast.

Do I just need to get the front wheels re-balanced or is something else need investigating. I've not seen wheel balance juddering go when coasting?

I had the same thing when I first got my 2011 170 Manual... It was wheel balancing...

The strangest was that it was only on acceleration as you describe.

If you take it to motorway speeds - (75/80mph ) the shuddering should be most noticeable if its wheel balancing.

indeed it's at motorway speeds - it was the lack of juddering when coasting that confused me. I'll get them rebalanced and see.

Could be a driveshaft issue, the high torque loads produced under acceleration can accentuate any wear there is in the joints, leading to a tyre balance type sensation through the steering wheel

Seen it on Volvo's and Fords

Sounds like a drive shaft, check  the boots haven't  split and lost the grease , the cv joint will  on the way out if so

I've found my 2014 facelift is very sensitive to wheel balancing when driving at higher speeds

Mine is an absolute nightmare for balancing.  Every time I get anything done to my tyres I end up returning several times to have the wheels rebalanced.  The 18" wheels are particularly sensitive to this

I had to go back a second time for rebalancing after I had winter tyres fitted to a set of Spectrum rims

1) damaged wheels - buckled or cracked,

2) damaged/crappy tyres,

3) crappy balancing machine.

Newbie to Briskoda although I've had the Octy 2 VRS 170PD manual for 8 years.

Mine has recently started to do the same - I'll get the fronts re-balanced see how we go!

Hopefully its not the drive shafts!

It happened on my mondeo, garage couldn't figure it out initially. As you put a lot of power on it would shake but ok going slowly. It was the "spider " on the drive shaft , this had dried out and wasn't rotating smoothly. Ford sussed it and said it was a good job I brought it in as I would have needed a new gearbox had I left it. So be warned

Wheels are in very good condition and the tyres are decent.  I've tried different tyre centres the last few times and still had to return due to balancing not being correct.  I never had this problem with 17" or smaller tyres.  It could just be down to sloppy workmanship in the tyre centre of course!
